Arithmetic Groups and Their Generalizations

Arithmetic Groups and Their Generalizations PDF Author: Lizhen Ji
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821848666
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
In one guise or another, many mathematicians are familiar with certain arithmetic groups, such as $\mathbf{Z}$ or $\textrm{SL}(n, \mathbf{Z})$. Yet, many applications of arithmetic groups and many connections to other subjects within mathematics are less well known. Indeed, arithmetic groups admit many natural and important generalizations. The purpose of this expository book is to explain, through some brief and informal comments and extensive references, what arithmetic groups and their generalizations are, why they are important to study, and how they can be understood and applied to many fields, such as analysis, geometry, topology, number theory, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. It is hoped that such an overview will shed a light on the important role played by arithmetic groups in modern mathematics. Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA.Table of Contents: Introduction; General comments on references; Examples of basic arithmetic groups; General arithmetic subgroups and locally symmetric spaces; Discrete subgroups of Lie groups and arithmeticity of lattices in Lie groups; Different completions of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $S$-arithmetic groups over number fields; Global fields and $S$-arithmetic groups over function fields; Finiteness properties of arithmetic and $S$-arithmetic groups; Symmetric spaces, Bruhat-Tits buildings and their arithmetic quotients; Compactifications of locally symmetric spaces; Rigidity of locally symmetric spaces; Automorphic forms and automorphic representations for general arithmetic groups; Cohomology of arithmetic groups; $K$-groups of rings of integers and $K$-groups of group rings; Locally homogeneous manifolds and period domains; Non-cofinite discrete groups, geometrically finite groups; Large scale geometry of discrete groups; Tree lattices; Hyperbolic groups; Mapping class groups and outer automorphism groups of free groups; Outer automorphism group of free groups and the outer spaces; References; Index. Review from Mathematical Reviews: ...the author deserves credit for having done the tremendous job of encompassing every aspect of arithmetic groups visible in today's mathematics in a systematic manner; the book should be an important guide for some time to come.(AMSIP/43.

Geometry Of Crystallographic Groups

Geometry Of Crystallographic Groups PDF Author: Andrzej Szczepanski
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814412279
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Crystallographic groups are groups which act in a nice way and via isometries on some n-dimensional Euclidean space. They got their name, because in three dimensions they occur as the symmetry groups of a crystal (which we imagine to extend to infinity in all directions). The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the basic theory of crystallographic groups is developed from the very beginning, while in the second part, more advanced and more recent topics are discussed. So the first part of the book should be usable as a textbook, while the second part is more interesting to researchers in the field. There are short introductions to the theme before every chapter. At the end of this book is a list of conjectures and open problems. Moreover there are three appendices. The last one gives an example of the torsion free crystallographic group with a trivial center and a trivial outer automorphism group. This volume omits topics about generalization of crystallographic groups to nilpotent or solvable world and classical crystallography. We want to emphasize that most theorems and facts presented in the second part are from the last two decades. This is after the book of L Charlap “Bieberbach groups and flat manifolds” was published.

Algebraic K-theory of Crystallographic Groups

Algebraic K-theory of Crystallographic Groups PDF Author: Daniel Scott Farley
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319081535
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
The Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture in algebraic K-theory offers a description of the algebraic K-theory of a group using a generalized homology theory. In cases where the conjecture is known to be a theorem, it gives a powerful method for computing the lower algebraic K-theory of a group. This book contains a computation of the lower algebraic K-theory of the split three-dimensional crystallographic groups, a geometrically important class of three-dimensional crystallographic group, representing a third of the total number. The book leads the reader through all aspects of the calculation. The first chapters describe the split crystallographic groups and their classifying spaces. Later chapters assemble the techniques that are needed to apply the isomorphism theorem. The result is a useful starting point for researchers who are interested in the computational side of the Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture, and a contribution to the growing literature in the field.

Computational and Combinatorial Group Theory and Cryptography

Computational and Combinatorial Group Theory and Cryptography PDF Author: Benjamin Fine
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821875639
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Computational Algebra, Groups, and Applications, held April 30-May 1, 2011, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Nevada, and the AMS Special Session on the Mathematical Aspects of Cryptography and Cyber Security, held September 10-11, 2011, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Over the past twenty years combinatorial and infinite group theory has been energized by three developments: the emergence of geometric and asymptotic group theory, the development of algebraic geometry over groups leading to the solution of the Tarski problems, and the development of group-based cryptography. These three areas in turn have had an impact on computational algebra and complexity theory. The papers in this volume, both survey and research, exhibit the tremendous vitality that is at the heart of group theory in the beginning of the twenty-first century as well as the diversity of interests in the field.
