There is no doubt that in the development of the Physics and Chemistry of Solids during the last fifteen years, the very important place taken by low-dimensional compounds will be remembered as a major event. Komiyama argues that future biotechnology may well rely on the use of rare-earth ions as unique catalysts that can slice DNA and RNA in order to allow their reprogramming, and thus lead to more effective bioengineered processes.
