Book Description
This special issue of Materials Science Forum contains the papers which were presented at the 1st International Meeting on Applied Physics (APHYS-2003), held in Badajoz (Spain), and more specifically, the selected papers which were presented during the conference sessions on Interfaces in Colloidal and Particulate Systems, covering Imaging Techniques, Microscopy; Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Bioengineered Materials, Applied Materials Science / Solid State Physics & Chemistry / Advanced and Functional Materials and Semiconductor Materials and Devices. Applied Physics is seen not really to be a branch of Physics, but rather the application of all of the many branches of Physics to the broad realm of practical problems in Science, Engineering and Industry. This conference was a truly multi-, and inter-disciplinary, event. The organizers had called for papers which related Physics to other sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Information Science, Medicine, etc, or which combined various areas of Physics; all with the aim of solving practical problems. In other words, the Conference specifically encouraged work which applied the techniques, training and culture of Physics to research areas which are usually associated with other scientific and engineering disciplines. This is a volume which one truly cannot afford to miss reading.

Universality of Nonclassical Nonlinearity

Universality of Nonclassical Nonlinearity PDF Author: Pier Paolo Delsanto
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 038735851X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 535

Book Description
This book presents the results of two major international research projects on phenomenology, theory and applications of Nonclassical Nonlinearity. It conveys concepts, experimental techniques and applications which were previously found in specialized journals. It also allows for an interdisciplinary audience to better understand the range of practical applications, and is timely and interesting to both researchers and professionals.

Micro- and Nanoscale Fluid Mechanics

Micro- and Nanoscale Fluid Mechanics PDF Author: Brian J. Kirby
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139489836
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 536

Book Description
This text focuses on the physics of fluid transport in micro- and nanofabricated liquid-phase systems, with consideration of gas bubbles, solid particles, and macromolecules. This text was designed with the goal of bringing together several areas that are often taught separately - namely, fluid mechanics, electrodynamics, and interfacial chemistry and electrochemistry - with a focused goal of preparing the modern microfluidics researcher to analyse and model continuum fluid mechanical systems encountered when working with micro- and nanofabricated devices. This text serves as a useful reference for practising researchers but is designed primarily for classroom instruction. Worked sample problems are included throughout to assist the student, and exercises at the end of each chapter help facilitate class learning.

Mathematical Research in Materials Science

Mathematical Research in Materials Science PDF Author: National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on the Mathematical Sciences Applied to Materials Science
Publisher: National Academies
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
This book describes fruitful past collaborations between the mathematical and materials sciences and indicates future challenges. It seeks both to encourage mathematical sciences research that will complement vital research in materials science and to raise awareness of the value of quantitative methods. The volume encourages both communities to increase cross-disciplinary collaborations, emphasizing that each has much to gain from such an increase, and it presents recommendations for facilitating such work. This book is written for both mathematical and materials science researchers interested in advancing research at this interface; for federal and state agency representatives interested in encouraging such collaborations; and for anyone wanting information on how such cross-disciplinary, collaborative efforts can be accomplished successfully.

Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications

Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309212855
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
Armor plays a significant role in the protection of warriors. During the course of history, the introduction of new materials and improvements in the materials already used to construct armor has led to better protection and a reduction in the weight of the armor. But even with such advances in materials, the weight of the armor required to manage threats of ever-increasing destructive capability presents a huge challenge. Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications explores the current theoretical and experimental understanding of the key issues surrounding protection materials, identifies the major challenges and technical gaps for developing the future generation of lightweight protection materials, and recommends a path forward for their development. It examines multiscale shockwave energy transfer mechanisms and experimental approaches for their characterization over short timescales, as well as multiscale modeling techniques to predict mechanisms for dissipating energy. The report also considers exemplary threats and design philosophy for the three key applications of armor systems: (1) personnel protection, including body armor and helmets, (2) vehicle armor, and (3) transparent armor. Opportunities in Protection Materials Science and Technology for Future Army Applications recommends that the Department of Defense (DoD) establish a defense initiative for protection materials by design (PMD), with associated funding lines for basic and applied research. The PMD initiative should include a combination of computational, experimental, and materials testing, characterization, and processing research conducted by government, industry, and academia.
