The present treatise is a critical study of different systems of Indian Philosophy based on original sources and its principal value lies in their interpretation. On almost all fundamental points the author has quoted from the original texts to enable the reader to compare the interpretations with the text. It discusses the doctrines of Vedanta as interpreted by Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka, Vallabha, Caitanya and Aurobindo. Critical Survey of Philosophy

Critical Survey of Philosophy PDF Author: Stanley Frederick Sharp, BA (Hons); FRICS (Retired)
Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 1785891871
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 456

Book Description
“The aim of philosophy is to acquire that wisdom, which enables man to live a good and flourishing life.” Stanley Frederick Sharp’s Critical Survey of Philosophy is an exploration of western philosophy. Stanley critiques the views of over fifty philosophers, from Thales to Wittgenstein, and tries to find solutions to various flaws that surface through their ideas. In particular, Stanley explores whether the ideas from philosophers can still be relevant in today’s society. He comments that whilst there are many books on philosophy today that accurately portray the views of key philosophers, they fail to critique them and explore how their ideas are wrongly flawed. For Stanley, unless a critical examination is made, the views of ancient philosophers are often presented as knowledge and fact rather than speculation. Their ideas should be debated. Students of philosophy will find this book useful as Stanley encourages readers to apply their own critical judgment to the ideas that philosophers have raised. In addition, those who enjoy philosophical debate will also find the book of interest.

English and American Philosophy Since 1800

English and American Philosophy Since 1800 PDF Author: Arthur Kenyon Rogers
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330868942
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 488

Book Description
Excerpt from English and American Philosophy Since 1800: A Critical Survey In making an attempt to estimate the philosophical ideas of the last century and a quarter, I have endeavored as a historian to be accurate, and as impartial as nature will permit a philosopher to be when dealing with opinions more or less out of harmony with his own. But it may prevent misleading anticipations if I confess at the start that the tracing of historical affiliations and historical causes has had only a secondary interest for me, and that the book as a whole is frankly propaganda, and designed to recommend one particular attitude as against competing attitudes; apart from this critical interest, it is not very likely that the work would have been carried through. If it were urged that fewer pages of criticism, and more attention to historical and descriptive data, would have resulted in a more generally useful volume, I do not know that I should be prepared to combat the claim; though I think it might be argued that one way, and at times the only way, to give an intelligible account of a philosophical doctrine, especially of the more esoteric sort, is by pointing out its limitations and obscurities. My real excuse however for writing a book in which criticism plays so large a part is that I wanted to do so. The particular philosophical standpoint which the following pages presuppose as a background, is one which, I am regret fully aware, many philosophers, perhaps most of them, will regard as lamentably crude and unadventurous. Typically two conceptions have been predominant in the history of thought - the psychological, and the logical. An Introduction to Indian Philosophy

An Introduction to Indian Philosophy PDF Author: Satischandra Chatterjee
Publisher: Motilal Banarsidass
ISBN: 8120840178
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
The object of this book is to provide a simple introduction to the Indian systems of philosophy. Each one of these systems has had a vast and varied development. An attempt has been made to introduce the reader to the spirit and outlook of Indian philosophy and help him to grasp thoroughly the central ideas rather than acquaint him with minute details. Modern students of philosophy feel many difficulties in understanding the Indian problems and theories. Their long experience with university students has helped the authors to realise these, and they have tried to remove them as far as possible. This accounts for most of the critical discussions which could otherwise have been dispensed with. The book has been primarily written for beginners. The first chapter which contains the general principles and basic features of Indian philosophy, as well as a brief sketch of each system, gives the student a bird's-eye view of the entire field and prepares him for a more intensive study of the systems which are contained in the following chapters. It is hoped, therefore, that the book will suit the needs of university students at different stages, as well as of general readers interested in Indian Philosophy.
