Cries of Earth and Altar

Cries of Earth and Altar PDF Author: Charles L. Bartow
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1630876585
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 115

Book Description
The poems of Cries of Earth and Altar speak of human laughter, mystery, work, play, sorrow--and even rage--as an oblation set upon heaven's high altar, which, as Calvin noted, is Christ himself. Upon that altar, the cries of earth are made a cry of glory, "Abba, Father" (Mark 14:36; Rom 8:15)! With the exception of those poems labeled "out of season," each poetic text is given a place in the Christian liturgical calendar: Advent-Epiphany, Transfiguration Sunday, Lent-Pentecost, and Ordinary Time. In the concluding essay, poetry and preaching are spoken of as fragile indicatives that implicitly call into question all claims of inviolability and permanence for humanly wrought systems of thought, common life, and governance. They survive as verbal, vocal, and physical gesture, as ink turned into blood.

The Church Cracked Open

The Church Cracked Open PDF Author: Stephanie Spellers
Publisher: Church Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1640654259
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
"This book will make a profound difference for the church in this moment in history." — The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry Sometimes it takes disruption and loss to break us open and call us home to God. It’s not surprising that a global pandemic and once-in-a-generation reckoning with white supremacy—on top of decades of systemic decline—have spurred Christians everywhere to ask who we are, why God placed us here and what difference that makes to the world. In this critical yet loving book, the author explores the American story and the Episcopal story in order to find out how communities steeped in racism, establishment, and privilege can at last fall in love with Jesus, walk humbly with the most vulnerable and embody beloved community in our own broken but beautiful way. The Church Cracked Open invites us to surrender privilege and redefine church, not just for the sake of others, but for our own salvation and liberation.

Book Description
An invitation to a conversation about the direction of our worship life. The Anglican colloquium of the North American Academy of Liturgy acknowledged the need for a collection of insights to aid in the liturgical formation of the Episcopal Church as we move into liturgical revision. The volume's contributions have been shaped around the clauses of resolution A068, looking at the ways in which parishes and individuals can live into this time of revision and creativity. With a shared understanding of our deepest held Christian values, the editors look forward to what the future brings for our collective worship lives and our missional lives as bearers of Christ to a troubled and broken world. This volume provides churches with tools for intelligent, cogent, accessible historical and theological conversation illuminating the way forward for the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement.

Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor

Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor PDF Author: Leonardo Boff
Publisher: Orbis Books
ISBN: 1608330974
Category : Environmental ethics
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Focusing on the threated Amazon of his native Brazil, Boff traces the economic and metaphysical ties that bind the fate of the rain forests with the fate of the indigenous peopls and the poor of the land. He shows how liberation theology must join with ecology in reclaiming the dignity of the earth and our sense of a common community, part of God's creation. To illustrate the possibilities, Boff turns to resrouces in Christian spirituality both ancient and modern, from the vision of St. Francis of Assisi to cosmic christology.
