Little Book of the Ashes

Little Book of the Ashes PDF Author: Ralph Dellor
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781906635466
Category : Test matches (Cricket)
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
From the first appearance of the tiny urn more than 120 years ago, the Ashes remain the most coveted prize in Anglo-Australian cricket. The kangaroo has held sway over the lion over much of the recent past, barring the 2005 series in England regarded by many as the finest contest in living memory. Although the Australians took the fullest possible revenge at the earliest opportunity, they return to English shores without some of their legendary performers of recent years, including Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist. The Little Book of the Ashestraces the history of Anglo-Australian rivalry back to the days of Grace and Spofforth, and the great Test match of 1882 in which both men took part. It was the match that induced the famous mock obituary mourning the death of English cricket. It concluded with the idea that the body would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia . That was when the story began. The greatest players are featured, from Jack Hobbs to Ian Botham, from Don Bradman to Shane Warne. Who will be the modern day heroes as the Ashes hopes of millions are reignited once more?

Clarke's Ashes Diaries give us a real behind-the-scenes view of the Australian team and the incredible ups and downs of a riveting and controversial Ashes series. Recorded day-by-day, and covering every highlight and lowlight with intelligence and honesty, this is a genuine insight into one of the most rewarding, most difficult and most high-profile jobs in Australia - captain of our cricket team.

The Ashes

The Ashes PDF Author: Arunabha Sengupta
Publisher: Cricketmash
ISBN: 9789492203083
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
The Ashes: the most ancient, most traditional and perhaps the most widely written about of all sporting rivalries. And in spite of all that, this book is indeed one of its kind. It tells the complete story of Anglo-Australian cricket, letting no facet remain untouched, pulling no punches, leaving no obscure detail unresearched, not really bothering about toeing any usual politically correct line. Yet it is presented in a format that is accessible to all, using the sequential art of story-telling as in a graphic novel. It has the depth to rival the most rigorous academic treatise, covering the cricketing excitement, touching upon the human element and essential - often uncomfortable - social history and geopolitical implications on and off the field. At the same time the flavour of entertainment remains intact through a marathon of 1000-plus illustrations that appeals to a wide readership. The illustrations tell the story of The Ashes in minute detail through the attention span barrier of the social media era, while remaining of supreme interest to serious cricket readers. They recreate the pre-camera and pre-video eras while adding multiple innovative layers to cricket in the more recent days.

Burning the Bails

Burning the Bails PDF Author: Krista Bell
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780987313980
Category : Ashes (Cricket trophy)
Languages : en
Pages : 30

Book Description
Several generations of Australian cricket fans have wondered why the Ashes, the supposed trophy for the Test Series between Australia and England, remain in London, having only visited Australia twice in over one hundred years, despite Australian victories. Burning the Bails recounts for the first time the true story behind the Ashes: that wooden bails were burnt by Lady Janet Clarke on Christmas Eve 1882 at her home, Rupertswood, in Sunbury, Victoria, after a social cricket match between some local lads and the visiting England team. Her son, Russell aged six, was witness to their burning. The Rupertswood Ashes were presented to the Honorable Ivo Bligh, the England captain, by Lady Janet, as a personal memento of his victory that Christmas Eve - but also as a joke. That August in 1882, following Australias unexpected defeat of England on home turf at The Oval, an English journalist had written a fake death notice for English cricket! 'The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia,' it had declared factiously. The Rupertswood Ashes that Lady Janet Clarke created that Christmas Eve in 1882 were kept by the England captain as his personal property until his death. They were never intended to be the actual trophy for the England/Australia Test Series, although an exact replica of the Rupertswood ashes is today given to the winner of the Series. Burning the Bails is a fictionalised account of the story, told from the perspective of six-year-old Russell Clarke. The picture book story is supported by pages of historical facts gleaned from Clarke family documents, as well as rare, original family photographs, including one of Russell, his older brother Clive, stumps, bails and a cricket bat.
