O Bioma Cerrado enfrenta o desafio de continuar existindo frente à ocupação do meIO ambiente natural pelas atividades antrópicas. Atualmente, vem sendo discutida a valoração dos "serviços ambientais" do Cerrado como estímulo à recuperação e conservação do Bioma. Este trabalho buscou avaliar o comportamento de 15 espécies nativas em plantio de recuperação de área degradada de Cerrado sentido restrito por pastagem, submetidas a diferentes tratamentos de adubação orgânica e roçagem, em Planaltina - DF. As espécies foram selecionadas conforme preconiza o Módulo Demonstrativo de Recuperação - MDR, ou seja, a utilização de espécies de uso múltiplo e de diferentes formações vegetacionais. Ainda, foi valorado o custo de manutenção dos tratamentos aplicados. Após 12 meses de plantio, de dezembro de 2006 a dezembro de 2007, a análise individual das espécies apontou diferença significativa entre os tratamentos para Simarouba versicolor e Tabebuia reoseo-alba. A análise em grupo por fitofisionomia classificou as espécies Anadenanthera colubrina, Amburana cearensis e Genipa americana como de maior incremento, em diâmetro e altura, para as formações florestais Mata de Galeria e Mata Seca, além de apresentarem taxa de 100% de sobrevivência em todos os tratamentos aplicados. Na fitofisionomia Cerrado sentido restrito, Simarouba versicolor apresentou crescimento significativo no tratamento sem adubação com roçagem (SA-CR). Constatou-se ainda que o crescimento das espécies A. colubrina, A. cearensis, G. americana, S. versicolor e T. roseo-alba, nos tratamentos com adubação orgânica e/ou roçagem, apresentou incremento significativamente maior do que no tratamento com ausência desses fatores. Isto indica que o custo de manutenção dos tratamentos foi validado pelo melhor incremento das espécies de Mata de Galeria, Mata Seca e Cerrado sentido restrito. O melhor resultado foi obtido no tratamento sem adubação com roçagem (SA-CR), sendo seu custo de implantação e manutenção de R$ 2.493,00 e R$ 36,00, respectivamente. O resultado positivo em incremento, a baixa taxa de mortalidade do experimento e o relativo baixo custo de manutenção indica que o plantio heterogêneo de espécies nativas associado a um mínimo de cuidado com sua manutenção pode trazer resultados positivos aos proprietários rurais que investirem no MDR. Este resultado pode vir a estimular a recuperação de áreas degradadas no Cerrado ao associar ganhos econômicos à atividade de recuperação.

Dyckia goehringii é uma espécie da família Bromeliaceae, nativa do Cerrado brasileiro, tendo sido coletada apenas no estado de Goiás. Ocorrem em neossolos litólicos, arenosos, ácidos, ricos em Mn, Fe e Al e de baixa fertilidade. O presente estudo objetivou: 1. avaliar o comportamento in situ de plantas de D. goehringii Gross & Rauh, caracterizando a morfologia dos seus frutos, sementes e plântulas obtidas em condições de laboratório; 2. avaliar a germinação das sementes sob diferentes temperaturas; 3. adequar os testes de vigor, normalmente utilizados para espécies cultivadas, à lotes de sementes de tamanho pequeno e de grandes de D. goehringii; 4. estimar o momento adequado de colheita de sementes, através do estudo da maturação dos frutos e das sementes e; 5. avaliar o comportamento das plantas em condições de cultivo protegido em casa de vegetação, sob malhas aluminizadas termorefletoras, com diferentes níveis de sombreamento.

Phytomass and Primary Production of the Various Vegetational Zones and of the Entire Biosphere The biosphere is that thin layer at the earth's surface in which living organisms exist and biological cycling takes place. It includes the upper horizons of the soil in which plants root, the atmosphere near the ground, (insofar as organisms penetrate this space), and all the surface waters. More than 99% of the earth's biomass is phytomass, to which we shall limit our discussion. Amounts of phytomass are distinctly related to vegeta tional zones. Because accurate determination of phytomass and primary production is difficult, only gross estimates have been available until recently. However, in 1970, Bazilevich et al. published (in Russian) more accurate calculations, based on the rapidly accumulating literature, for the various thermal zones and bioclimatic regions of the earth. These authors calculated mean phyto mass and mean annual primary production for the various regions as dry mass (in tons) per hectare. On the basis of measurements of the areas covered by the individual regions, excluding rivers, lakes, glaciers, and permanent snow, total phytomass and total annual primary production for the various regions were obtained (see table). The sum of these figures is the phytomass and annual production of the land surface of the earth. In addition, the table gives corresponding data for the waters of the earth. The values involved are potential i. e. , they are based on natural vegetation uninfluenced by man.

The first edition of my book "Climate and Circulation of the Tropics" was reasonably up to date to the middle of 1985. In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H. Lessmann, San Salvador, sent me updates of data series not easily accessible. I have benefitted from discussions with numerous colleagues in the United States and overseas. The analysis of vegetation history is one of the prime objectives for vegetation scientists. In order to understand the recent composition of local floras and plant communities a second knowledge of species com position during recent millenia is essential. With the present concern over climate changes, due to human activities, an understanding of past vegeta tion distribution becomes even more important, since the correlation between climate and vegetation can often be used to predict possible impacts to crops and forests. I was very fortunate to receive the help of Drs. Webb and Huntley to compile this volume on vegetation history. They have collated an impres sive set of papers which together give an account of the vegetation history of most of the continents during the late-Tertiary and Quaternery periods. There are, however, gaps in the coverage achieved, most notably Africa, and Asia apart from Japan. The information in this book will nonetheless certainly be used widely by vegetation scientists for the regions covered in the book and much of it has relevance to the areas not explicitly described. The authors of the individual chapters have done their best to cover recent topics of interest as well as established facts. It is intended that a separate volume will be produced in the near future covering the vegetation history of Africa and Asia. I thank the editors of It fits well into the this volume for their commendable achievement.
