Pages : 18
Book Description
In a previous investigation, tests had been conducted on compact specimens made of A508 Class 2A steel to study specimen geometry effects on JR-Curve behavior. No particular geometry effects were shown in specimens ranging in size from 1⁄2T to 10T when conditions for J-controlled growth were satisfied. These same specimens had been instrumented to develop crack opening displacement (COD) toughness values using a plastic hinge model. The COD-type R-Curve behavior was examined herein for specimen geometry effects and crack opening angle (COA) behavior.

Procedures for Precision Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Using Crack-Opening Displacement Techniques
Author: GR. Yoder
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : 7 point incremental polynomial
Languages : en
Pages : 16
Book Description
This paper describes experimental and analytical procedures whereby the conventional commercial fracture mechanics clip-gage can be used for precision measurement of fatigue crack growth rate in compact-type specimens. Potential sources of error in measuring crack length via crack-opening displacement (COD) techniques are delineated. Comparisons are made between crack-length data obtained via specimen surface observations and COD techniques. Comparisons are also made between data analyzed by the secant and 7-point incremental polynomial methods. It is emphasized that COD techniques can enhance the accuracy of the secant method of data reduction. Steploading procedures using COD techniques are described. Proposed amendments to ASTM Tentative Test Method for Constant-Load-Amplitude Fatigue Crack Growth Rates Above 10-8 m/Cycle (E 647-78 T) regarding incrementing of crack-length measurements via COD techniques are discussed.

Fracture Toughness Testing
Author: John E. Srawley
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fracture mechanics
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
A comprehensive survey is presented of current methods of fracture toughness testing that are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. General principles are discussed in relation to the basic two-dimensional crack stress field model and in relation to real three-dimensional specimens. The designs and necessary dimensions of specimens for mixed mode and opening mode (plane strain) crack toughness measurement are considered in detail. Methods of test instrumentation and procedure are described. Expressions for the calculation of crack toughness values are given for the common types of specimens.
