With Courage and Common Sense

With Courage and Common Sense PDF Author: Susan Wittig Albert
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292784406
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Women who were sixty or older at the turn of the twenty-first century have lived through some of recent history's most momentous moments—and yet these women often believe that their personal lives and stories are insignificant, not worthy of being recorded for future generations. To change that perception and capture some of these life stories before they are lost, the Story Circle Network, a national organization dedicated to helping women write about their lives, developed the Older Women's Legacy (OWL) Circle Memoir Workshops. During the first two years of the project (1998-2000), nearly 500 older women participated in workshops that offered them the opportunity and encouragement to reflect on and create written records of their lives. With Courage and Common Sense presents an extensive selection of memoirs from the OWL Circle project. Organized thematically, they describe women's experiences of identity, place, work, family life, love and marriage, loss and healing, adventures great and small, major historical events, and legacies to keep and pass along. Taken as a whole, the memoirs chronicle far-reaching changes in the ways that women participated in the world during the twentieth century. They show how women learned to surmount obstacles, to courageously make the most of the opportunities that came their way, and to move quietly and wisely beyond the limits that were imposed upon them.

The Commonsense Kitchen

The Commonsense Kitchen PDF Author: Tom Hudgens
Publisher: Chronicle Books
ISBN: 1452100330
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 890

Book Description
A compendium of over five hundred simple, hearty recipes to spark culinary imaginations, plus lessons on important skills in the kitchen and home. The Commonsense Kitchen is a cookbook that is at once so useful and so spirited you can imagine it becoming a kitchen staple. And it’s from an unusual source—one of the toughest colleges to get into in the United States, Deep Springs is an organic farm, school, and working cattle ranch in the high desert of the Sierra Nevada. This general cookbook has more than five hundred recipes for delicious, honest staples and sassy regional specialties such as Red Chile Enchiladas and Mama Nell’s Kentucky Bourbon Balls. What’s more, this book features amazing food as well as lessons in life skills, from the proper way to wash dishes to how to make homemade soap. The Commonsense Kitchen is equally at home on the shelf of an urban foodie or a rural home cook. “Written by a former chef at, and graduate of, Deep Springs College in California, a men-only two-year college on a working ranch where students partake in hard physical labor along with academics, and learn a good deal about food, from farming to butchering to butter making, this hefty volume is refreshing in its straightforwardness. . . . The instructions are clear—with a good glossary of culinary terms—and the recipes for the most part are simple and appealing. They include the expected manly, hearty fare, such as biscuits and gravy for breakfast, chicken and dumplings, and steak fried in beef tallow. But there are many more entries along the lines of an asparagus mushroom frittata and fennel, blood orange, and toasted almond salad, which celebrate fresh flavors and seasonal ingredients.” —Publishers Weekly “If any of this year’s cookbooks is headed for dog-eared longevity, complete with tomato-sauce splatters and flour-dustings, it’s Tom Hudgens’ The Commonsense Kitchen. ...As appropriate for beginning cooks as it is for those with more experience, this one will stick around your kitchen for years.” —Denver Post, Best Cookbooks of 2010

Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise

Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise PDF Author: David Ezra Stein

Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 45

Book Description
Surprise! The little red chicken is back — and as endearingly silly as ever — in David Ezra Stein’s follow-up to the Caldecott Honor–winning Interrupting Chicken. It’s homework time for the little red chicken, who has just learned about something every good story should have: an elephant of surprise. Or could it be an element of surprise (as her amused papa explains)? As they dive in to story after story, looking for the part that makes a reader say “Whoa! I didn’t know that was going to happen,” Papa is sure he can convince Chicken he’s right. After all, there are definitely no elephants in “The Ugly Duckling,” “Rapunzel,” or “The Little Mermaid” — or are there? Elephant or element, something unexpected awaits Papa in every story, but a surprise may be in store for the little red chicken as well. Full of the same boisterous charm that made Interrupting Chicken so beloved by readers, this gleeful follow-up is sure to delight fans of stories, surprises, and elephants alike.
