Courting Science

Courting Science PDF Author: Damon V. Coletta
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 0804798966
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
In Courting Science, Damon Coletta offers a novel explanation for the decline of American leadership in world affairs. Whether the American Century ends sooner rather than later may depend on America's capacity for self-reflection and, ultimately, self-restraint when it comes to science, technology, and engineering. Democracy's affinity for advanced technology has to be balanced against scientific research and progress as a global enterprise. In an era of rising challengers to America's lead in the international order and an increasingly globalized civil society, a "Scientific State" has a better chance of extending its dominance. In order to draw closer to this ideal, though, the United States will have to reconsider its grand strategy. It must have a strategy that scrutinizes how tightly it constrains, how narrowly it directs, and how far it trusts American scientists. If given the opportunity, scientists have the potential to lead a second American Century through domestic science and technology policy, international diplomacy, and transnational networks for global governance.

Hellenistic Science at Court

Hellenistic Science at Court PDF Author: Marquis Berrey
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110540150
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
The development of science in the modern world is often held to depend on such institutions as universities, peer-reviewed journals, and democracy. How, then, did new science emerge in the pre-modern culture of the Hellenistic Egyptian monarchy? Berrey argues that the court society formed around the Ptolemaic pharaohs Ptolemy III and IV (reigned successively 246-205/4 BCE) provided an audience for cross-disciplinary, learned knowledge, as physicians, mathematicians, and mechanicians clothed themselves in the virtues of courtiers attendant on the kings. The multicultural Greco-Egyptian court society prized entertainment that drew on earlier literature, mixed genres and cultures, and highlighted motion and sound. New cross-disciplinary science in the Hellenistic period gained its social currency and subsequent scientific success through its entertainment value as court science. Ancient court science sheds light on the long history of scientific interdisciplinarity.

Courting Athena

Courting Athena PDF Author: Zach Lee
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
What really exists? How do I know my beliefs are correct? Are my actions objectively right or wrong (and why)? What is the role of government? What are the limits of science? Does God exist? What makes me, me? These questions are all philosophical in nature. But to most people, philosophy feels like an intimidating or irrelevant topic. Courting Athena is a short introduction into this amazing subject. However, unlike many other introductions to philosophy (which, at times, can be sterile, boring, and overwhelming), this book is written with the average reader in mind. It is a short, accessible, and engaging invitation that will teach you how to think more clearly about the world around you. Each chapter summarizes a major area of philosophy and introduces you to the major ideas and thinkers you need to know. Everything from knowledge to science to political systems to religion are addressed within these pages. Athena, the mythical goddess of wisdom, invites you to engage with her in a short, yet simple journey through the incredible topic of philosophy.

Courting Desire

Courting Desire PDF Author: Rama Srinivasan
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 1978803559
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
Inquiries into marital patterns can serve as an effective lens to analyze social structures and material cultures not only on the question of sexuality, but also on the nature of a private citizen’s engagement with state and law. Through ethnographic research in courtrooms, community, and kinship spaces, the author outlines the transformations in material culture and political economy that have led to renewed negotiations on the institution of marriage in North India, especially in legal spaces. Tracing organically evolving notions of sexual consent and legal subjectivity, Courting Desire underlines how non-normative decisions regarding marriage become possible in a region otherwise known for high instances of honor killings and rigid kinship structures. Aspirations for consensual relationships have led to a tentative attempt to forge relationships that are non-normative but grudgingly approved after state intervention. The book traces this nascent and under-explored trend in the North Indian landscape.
