Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on United States History, to Accompany the Course of Study for the Common Schools of Illinois God has revealed his mind to man, not only in the Bible, but in the rocks, the plants, the animals, the stars, and in man himself. This is why the physical sciences are so rich in content; they reveal the thought of God himself. The particular science has for its organizing principle some fundamental idea which when comprehended reveals the highest thought of a master mind. The comprehension of this thought, and its proper application to the affairs of every-day life, is one of the chief ends in all good systems of education. The mastery of the application of this fundamental principle, together with that of its sub-phases as seen in the particular phenomena or objects of study, is the work of the information side of an education. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on United States History, to Accompany the Course of Study for the Common Schools of Illinois This little volume is in no sense to be considered a History of the United States. It is intended to accompany the Course of Study for the Public Schools of Illinois. The matter is largely a reprint of the articles on the Course in History which have been running in The School News for the past two years. The receipt of many kind expressions from teachers in this and adjoining states, relative to these articles, has led to the belief that these notes on the Course in History might be further useful if put in book form. The plan of the book will readily suggest itself to the teacher. Part I. takes up the work of the Seventh Grade. The years work is divided into eight sections. The course for each month is followed by notes, suggestions, and information to which it is hoped will be found helpful to teachers in the preparation of their daily lessons. Part II. deals with the work of the Eighth Grade in a similar manner. At the close of Part II. is found a general review of the two years work. Book Description
Excerpt from Poems for the Study of Language, Vol. 3: Prescribed in the Course of Study for the Common Schools of Illinois; For Seven and Eight Years, With Suggestions for Study Language work in our elementary schools should deal chiefly with the art of speech. Only when pupils have reached the last years of their common-school course are they ready for any study of the science of language. But long before this time they should begin to acquire power in self expression. Such language training should be provided as will tend to give some measure of clearness, freedom, and virility, as well as formal correctness of speech. The outline for language work in the Illinois State Course of Study was prepared in the belief that wealth of thought and power in expression must develop together In the series of composition exercises suggested in the course of study, the natural interests of the child are recognized, the interests that grow out of his home life, the life of the community, and the character of the surrounding country. To write acceptably he must write about subjects of which he has knowledge. But any series of language lessons that does not tend to make his own life and the world of which he is a part more interesting to him, more full of things to write about and talk about, is likely to fail of large language results. To help broaden and deepen the interests of the pupils, as well as to provide high ideals of expression, one or two poems for study are named each month in addition to the composition exercises and the more formal work of the course. Nearly a hundred poems are included in the six years' work outlined. They are all brought together for the first time in this volume.
