Gender Education and Equality in a Global Context

Gender Education and Equality in a Global Context PDF Author: Shailaja Fennell
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134111967
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
The Millennium Development Goals aim to achieve basic education for all by 2015. But can such global agendas address national and local gender inequalities and will they empower women through education? This thought-provoking book offers an opportunity to engage critically with existing and emergent conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches to this global debate. It is divided into three sections that: reconceptualise the definitions of gender equality used by various social scientific disciplines, international organisations and policy makers; illustrate the methodologies used to collect the voices of young men and women and their teachers telling stories of their success in lifting the burdens of poverty and negotiating traditional gender relations; trace the impact of global gender agendas on national education policies, such as citizenship education, poverty reduction strategies, and feminist activism around adult women’s learning. Gender Education and Equality in a Global Context is an invaluable introduction to the range of conceptual frameworks and innovative research methods that address issues of gender education and development.

Water, Democracy and Neoliberalism in India

Water, Democracy and Neoliberalism in India PDF Author: Vicky Walters
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135040923
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Since the early 1990s, the achievement of ‘good governance’ has been a dominant discourse in the pursuit of social and economic development. This book presents a critical challenge to the contemporary development paradigm of good governance. Based on original ethnographic fieldwork on urban water governance reforms in south India (Karnataka), the book examines the two propositions that underlie the current good governance debate. The first refers to a claim that good governance is both democratic and pro-market. The second to the claim that commercially-oriented water services, whether private or public, are good for poor and marginalised citizens. The book analyses these propositions as they intersect on three levels: policy, practice (process) and outcome. It argues that a number of tensions and contradictions exist within and between what the discourse promises, the everyday practises of how good governance policies are implemented and in the outcomes of such. It reveals the networks of power and the complexity of local reforms and their relation to global discourses as well as the motivations and every day practises of those who currently possess the power to reform. The book is of interest to academics in the fields of Development Studies, Asian Studies and Comparative Politics.

Political Governance in Post-Genocide Rwanda

Political Governance in Post-Genocide Rwanda PDF Author: Filip Reyntjens
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107043557
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 319

Book Description
Analyses political governance in post-genocide Rwanda, focusing on the rise of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). In the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the RPF has employed various means - rigged elections, elimination of opposition parties and civil society, legislation outlawing dissenting opinions, and terrorism - to consolidate its position as the nation's ruling party. Although Rwanda is considered successful for its technocratic governance, societal reforms, and economic development, shows the regime's darker side of human rights abuses, social engineering projects, information management schemes, and retributive justice system.

Foreign Aid

Foreign Aid PDF Author: Andrew A. Bealinger
Publisher: Nova Publishers
ISBN: 9781600210679
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
Foreign aid has long become a misnomer. It might properly be called 'foreign policy with funds'. Foreign aid packages have become tools to help reign in countries who disagree with this or that foreign policy, to allow leaders of those receiving countries to become privately wealthy and thus beholden to the donor country, and to stipulate that up to 40 per cent of the total 'aid' must be in the form of contracts to companies from the donor country who are often politically tied to the political administration of the donor country. This book provides the background information on important aspects of foreign aid.

Japan's Foreign Aid

Japan's Foreign Aid PDF Author: David Arase
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134239025
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
Filling a gap in the existing literature, this book analyzes the distinctive features of Japan’s development aid, especially technical co-operation, in comparison with other donors’ aid. Incorporating a wealth of research, it discusses whether Japan is behind other leading donor countries in rethinking its aid policy and whether it lacks transparency, sensitivity to recipient needs, and a coherent and coordinated policy that targets poverty. The volume assesses the nature and effectiveness of the administration of Japan’s aid, and explores the degree of involvement of private sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Including contributions from experts with direct experience with Japanese ODA, the book provides a wide range of recipient and donor viewpoints and presents important policy recommendations.
