The larger unit required 2 hours and hours for loading and unloading respectively. No loading time was designated for the smaller unit as it would have completed its load and been ready for the trip to the plant or transfer point One hour was needed for unloading, assuming the pump on the small truck had: capacity of 70 gallons per minute. Repairs, lubrication, and other maintenance were prorated according to mileage per trip. Driving time was based on a truck speed of 40 m.p.h. Excerpt from Comparing Bulk and Can Milk Hauling Costs From the actual Operating data, however, we obtained measurements of time and mileage per hundred weight Of milk hauled. These data were. Used to construct a series of model routes and estimate costs of serving each route by can, daily bulk and every-other-day bulk routes. On each of the model routes the average size of producers served and similar items affecting costs were the same irrespective of the method of hauling. A typical can truck operation was compared with a typical bulk truck Operation. For purposes of this com parison we selected the 125-ean capacity can truck and the gallon capacity tank truck, each haul ing an ave'rage load of 80 percent of capacity. It was assumed that the bulk trucks hauled 2 loads a day while the can trucks hauled only 1 load. This study thus compares can and bulk milk hauling costs when the bulk truck hauls a load 50 percent in excess of that of the can truck and hauls 2 loads a day as compared to 1 for the can truck. Excerpt from Transportation of New Hampshire Milk, Vol. 2: Reorganization of Truck Routes T his is the second of two studies on the transportation of milk from farms to the markets where it is consumed. The preceding study2 laid particular emphasis upon the charges levied upon the milk. These charges were analyzed in considerable detail in an attempt to determine not only their amount but the bases upon which they were set. The present study pays attention to what might be termed the physical process of assembling milk from farms to plants, as contrasted with the preceding study which had to do with charges levied on this milk. This attention to the process of milk hauling is not for the purpose of obtain ing knowledge for its own sake, but is expected to be of value in re organizing the marketing structure. Excessive charges may come about in two ways: first, by a failure to keep charges in proper relationship to the cost of the services rendered, and second, by a failure to maintain the physical process of assembly in a condition of maximum efficiency.
