Book Description
Low frequency fatigue crack growth rates in air and seawater are reported for manual metal arc, synergic metal inert gas, electron beam and laser beam welds in Q1N steel. The stress corrosion crack growth susceptibility in seawater of the weldments was also studied and both the electron beam and laser beam welds exhibited susceptibility whilst the other welds and parent steel did not. All welds except the 'as-welded' laser beam welds showed silmilar fatigue crack growth rates to the parent plate. When tested in seawater the laser beam weld was found to exhibit exceptionally fast crack growth rates. The factors influencing fatigue crack growth in weldments are discussed. (Author).

Corrosion Fatigue Crack-Growth Characteristics of Several HY-100 Steel Weldments with Cathodic Protection

Corrosion Fatigue Crack-Growth Characteristics of Several HY-100 Steel Weldments with Cathodic Protection PDF Author:

Book Description
The corrosion fatigue crack-growth properties of several types of HY-100 steel weldments were studied, primarily in an environment of seawater with cathodic protection by zinc anode. Shielded metal-arc and gas metal-arc of both pulsed and spray-arc processes, and submerged-arc weldments were included. The fatigue crack growth tests were conducted using compact specimens removed from the weldments to confine the path of the growing crack in all weld metal. Constant amplitude, sinusoidal loads were applied at a frequency of 0.17 hertz with a load ratio (minimum-to-maximum) of 0.10. In general, fatigue crack growth in weldments was considerably slower than that in HY-100 plate under the same conditions of load and environment, where the applied potential accelerated crack-growth rate. The results showed minor differences among the weldments. It was suggested that the residual stress along the weld center line, the inhomogeneity of the weld metal with respect to the crack path, defects, and minor porosity all act to retard crack growth, especially at lower stress intensity levels. These factors tend to mask the environmental effects. However, weldments prepared with high heat input showed greater resistance to fatigue crack propagation than weldments prepared at low heat input.

Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Thresholds for Cast Nickel-Aluminum Bronze and Welds

Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Thresholds for Cast Nickel-Aluminum Bronze and Welds PDF Author: EJ. Czyryca

Book Description
Fatigue crack-growth rate tests of cast NAB and NAB weld metal specimens were conducted to determine the threshold for fatigue crack growth (?Kth). The tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM E 647, Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates, in artificial seawater at a cyclic frequency of 2 Hz at R-ratios of +0.05, +0.40, and +0.60. The specimens were machined from both poor and good quality, as-cast NAB. Production NAB weldments were used for NAB weld metal specimens.

Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior in Mild Steel Weldments at Low Temperatures

Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior in Mild Steel Weldments at Low Temperatures PDF Author: Y. Kitsunai

Book Description
Fatigue crack growth rates for the base metal and welds of SM50A steel weldments were determined at temperatures ranging from room temperature down to 123 K. For the base metal, crack growth rates between room temperature and 188 K decreased slightly with decreasing temperature. At 123 K, the growth rate of the base metal increased markedly because of cyclic cleavage during striation growth. For the welds, no systematic correlation can be made between temperature and growth rate. The growth rates of the welds were lower than those of the base metal regardless of temperature because the crack tips in the weld specimens always existed in the field of compressive residual stresses. Therefore the growth rates of the welds were dominated by residual welding stress rather than temperature. The crack growth rates of the base metal and the welds with residual stresses under low temperatures were closely correlated with the effective stress intensity factor range (?Keff), estimated based on crack closure measurements, when the crack growth mechanism was dominated by striation formation.
