Book Description
Compression failure of composites is often the critical design driver of composite structures. In particular it is known that the presence of bre waviness whitin a laminate can considerable reduce the compression performance. Studies are conducted for crossply laminates varying degrees of ply waviness. Waviness is assumed to be in the direction of the 0° ply. Sites of wrinkling are localized using non-destructive (ultrasonic) inspection methods. Compression test specimens are frabicated from laminates, containing arti cially induced waviness. Compression strength and fracture mechanisms are investigated using digital speckle photogrammetry. A nite element model is developed to predict the regions with stress concentration and the strain eld in the wrinkling area. It is demonstrated the in uence of bre waviness on the compression strength.

Failure Analysis and Fractography of Polymer Composites

Failure Analysis and Fractography of Polymer Composites PDF Author: Emile Greenhalgh
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1845696816
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 608

Book Description
The growing use of polymer composites is leading to increasing demand for fractographic expertise. Fractography is the study of fracture surface morphologies and it gives an insight into damage and failure mechanisms, underpinning the development of physically-based failure criteria. In composites research it provides a crucial link between predictive models and experimental observations. Finally, it is vital for post-mortem analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components, the findings of which can be used to optimise future designs.Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites covers the following topics: methodology and tools for failure analysis; fibre-dominated failures; delamination-dominated failures; fatigue failures; the influence of fibre architecture on failure; types of defect and damage; case studies of failures due to overload and design deficiencies; case studies of failures due to material and manufacturing defects; and case studies of failures due to in-service factors. With its distinguished author, Failure analysis and fractography of polymer composites is a standard reference text for researchers working on damage and failure mechanisms in composites, engineers characterising manufacturing and in-service defects in composite structures, and investigators undertaking post-mortem failure analysis of components. The book is aimed at both academic and industrial users, specifically final year and postgraduate engineering and materials students researching composites and industry designers and engineers in aerospace, civil, marine, power and transport applications. Examines the study of fracture surface morphologies in uderstanding composite structural behaviour Discusses composites research and post-modern analysis of failed or crashed polymer composite components Provides an overview of damage mechanisms, types of defect and failure criteria

Effects of Waviness in Composite Materials

Effects of Waviness in Composite Materials PDF Author: Alejandro Rodríguez Puig

Book Description
This work is first approach study of the effects of fiber waviness on the elastic properties, specially the Young's Modulus, of Laminate Composite Materials. This study has been carried out at the Institute for Aircraft Design (Intitut für Fleugzeugbau) of the University of Stuttgart (Universität Stuttgart) in Germany under the supervision of Dr. Anthony K. Pickett. The study involved work in three main areas: analytical, Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) and experimental. The analytical analysis has been developed from the studies carried out by H.M. Hsiao and I.M. Daniel from the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA, in which they establish a complete and a simplified calculus procedure for different waviness types. In this work, the complete procedure was used. ([1] and [2]) The FEA analysis was carried out using the commercial code from ESI group. As only elastic properties were tested, no delamination on failure models were developed. The experimental analysis included the manufacturing of suitable laminate specimens of carbon fiber. Compression tests until first ply failure were also carried out in order to state the variation of elastic properties for a given relation of wave amplitude and wavelength.

Presents the current state-of-the-art investigations on fatigue behavior of composite materials, mainly those reinforced with textiles Contains invaluable information pertaining to a wide variety of industries, including automotive, aeronautical, and marine, amongst others Provides comprehensive information on the huge variety of interlacement geometric architectures that are suitable for a broad range of different applications

Stress Analysis of Fiber-reinforced Composite Materials

Stress Analysis of Fiber-reinforced Composite Materials PDF Author: M. W. Hyer
Publisher: DEStech Publications, Inc
ISBN: 193207886X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 718

Book Description
Updated and improved, Stress Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Materials, Hyer's work remains the definitive introduction to the use of mechanics to understand stresses in composites caused by deformations, loading, and temperature changes. In contrast to a materials science approach, Hyer emphasizes the micromechanics of stress and deformation for composite material analysis. The book provides invaluable analytic tools for students and engineers seeking to understand composite properties and failure limits. A key feature is a series of analytic problems continuing throughout the text, starting from relatively simple problems, which are built up step-by-step with accompanying calculations. The problem series uses the same material properties, so the impact of the elastic and thermal expansion properties for a single-layer of FR material on the stress, strains, elastic properties, thermal expansion and failure stress of cross-ply and angle-ply symmetric and unsymmetric laminates can be evaluated. The book shows how thermally induced stresses and strains due to curing, add to or subtract from those due to applied loads.Another important element, and one unique to this book, is an emphasis on the difference between specifying the applied loads, i.e., force and moment results, often the case in practice, versus specifying strains and curvatures and determining the subsequent stresses and force and moment results. This represents a fundamental distinction in solid mechanics.

Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures

Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures PDF Author: Rikard Benton Heslehurst
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 146658047X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structure or result in unfavorable load paths. Emphasizing defect identification and restitution, Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures explains how defects and damage in composite materials and structures impact composite component performance. Providing ready access to an extensive, descriptive list of defects and damage types, this must-have reference: Examines defect criticality in composite structures Recommends repair actions to restore structural integrity Discusses failure modes and mechanisms of composites due to defects Reviews NDI processes for finding and identifying defects in composite materials Relating defect detection methods to defect type, the author merges his experience in the field of in-service activities for composite airframe maintenance and repair with indispensable reports and articles on defects and damage in advanced composite materials from the last 50 years.
