Book Description
This thesis presents a measurement of the tau Michel parameters. This measurement utilizes the highly polarized SLC electron beam to extract these quantities directly from the measured tau decay spectra using the 1993--95 SLD sample of 4,528 tau pair events. The results are[rho][sup e]= 0.71[+-] 0.14[+-] 0.05, [xi][sup e]= 1.16[+-] 0.52[+-] 0.06, and ([xi][delta])[sup e]= 0.85[+-] 0.43[+-] 0.08 for tau decays to electrons and[rho][sup[mu]]= 0.54[+-] 0.28[sup[minus]] 0.14, [eta][sup[mu]]=[minus]0.59[+-] 0.82[+-] 0.45, [xi][sup[mu]]= 0.75[+-] 0.50[+-] 0.14, and ([xi][delta])[sup[mu]]= 0.82[+-] 0.32[+-] 0.07 for tau decays to muons. Combining all leptonic tau decays gives[rho]= 0.72[+-] 0.09[+-] 0.03, [xi]= 1.05[+-] 0.35[+-] 0.04, and[Xi][delta]= 0.88[+-] 0.27[+-] 0.04. These results agree well with the current world average and the Standard Model.

Book Description
This thesis is the beginning of a larger project to use BaBar to examine weak couplings through leptonic [tau] decay. I will use the ratio of Br... and Br... and the Michel parameters [rho] and [eta]. which describe the momenta spectrum of the daughter leptons. I studied using a simultaneous fit to the [tau] --> e and [tau] --> [mu] momentum spectra, using [rho], [eta], the ratio Br..., and total number of events as the fit variables. I created a simple Monte Carlo simulation which generated a. sample data spectrum and fit it for the Michel parameters [rho] and [eta]. I used the Monte Carlo to assess the impact of the uncertainties in the detector response function on the measurement of the ratio Br... My conclusion is that the three efficiency uncertainties equally have the greatest effect on the measurement of the number of events. The energy offset affects the measurement of Br... and that the energy scale and offset uncertainties have a non-negligible effect on [rho] and [eta].

Book Description
Using the CLEO II detector at the e[sup+]e[sup -] storage ring CESR, we have determined the Michel parameters[rho], [zeta], and[delta] in[tau][sup[-+]][nu][bar[nu]] decay as well as the[tau] neutrino helicity parameter H[sub[nu][sub[tau]]] in[tau][sup[-+]][pi][sup 0][nu] decay. From a data sample of 3.02 x 10[sup 6][tau] pairs produced at[radical]s= 10.6 GeV, using events of the topology e[sup+]e[sup -][yields][tau][sup+][tau][sup -][yields] (l[sup[+-]][nu][bar[nu]])([pi][sup[-+]][pi][sup 0][nu]) and e[sup+]e[sup -][yields][tau][sup+][tau][sup -][yields] ([pi][sup[+-]][pi][sup 0][bar[nu]])([pi][sup[-+]][pi][sup 0][nu]), and the determined sign of h[sub[nu][sub[tau]]][1,2], the combined result of the three samples is:[rho]= 0.747[+-] 0.010[+-] 0.006, [zeta]= 1.007[+-] 0.040[+-] 0.015, [zeta][delta]= 0.745[+-]0.026[+-]0.009, and h[sub[nu][sub[tau]]]= -0.995[+-] 0.010[+-] 0.003. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model V-A interaction.
