Ce mémoire porte sur l'expérience de femmes québécoises ayant accouché à domicile ou en maison de naissance auprès d'une sage-femme. Afin de mettre en lumière leur vécu, vingt mères ayant accouché tout au plus quinze mois auparavant ont été rencontrées lors d'entrevues semi-dirigées. Quatre sages-femmes ont aussi parlé de leur pratique. L'analyse des propos des mères a mis l'accent sur les concepts de corps, de douleur et de risque afin de comprendre la façon dont celles-ci ont vécu et intégré leur dernière expérience périnatale. De ces témoignages ont émergé trois types d'expériences de la naissance auprès d'une sage-femme, laissant entrevoir combien cet événement est aussi unique que la femme qui le vit. Ainsi, pour certaines femmes, l'accouchement auprès d'une sage-femme va de soi, pour d'autres il vise à réparer déceptions, blessures ou traumatismes, et enfin pour certaines, cela permet de s'éloigner des protocoles hospitaliers et des interventions potentielles.
