Cooperative Localization in Wireless Networked Systems

Cooperative Localization in Wireless Networked Systems PDF Author: Mauricio Castillo-Effen

Book Description
ABSTRACT: A novel solution for the localization of wireless networked systems is presented. The solution is based on cooperative estimation, inter-node ranging and strap-down inertial navigation. This approach overrides limitations that are commonly found in currently available localization/positioning solutions. Some solutions, such as GPS, make use of previously deployed infrastructure. In other methods, computations are performed in a central fusion center. In the robotics field, current localization techniques rely on a simultaneous localization and mapping, (SLAM), process, which is slow and requires sensors such as laser range finders or cameras. One of the main attributes of this research is the holistic view of the problem and a systems-engineering approach, which begins with analyzing requirements and establishing metrics for localization. The all encompassing approach provides for concurrent consideration and integration of several aspects of the localization problem, from sensor fusion algorithms for position estimation to the communication protocols required for enabling cooperative localization. As a result, a conceptual solution is presented, which is flexible, general and one that can be adapted to a variety of application scenarios. A major advantage of the solution resides in the utilization of wireless network interfaces for communications and for exteroceptive sensing. In addition, the localization solution can be seamlessly integrated into other localization schemes, which will provide faster convergence, higher accuracy and less latency. Two case-studies for developing the main aspects of cooperative localization were employed. Wireless sensor networks and multi-robot systems, composed of ground robots, provided an information base from which this research was launched. In the wireless sensor network field, novel nonlinear cooperative estimation algorithms are proposed for sequential position estimation. In the field of multi-robot systems the issues of mobility and proprioception, which uses inertial measurement systems for estimating motion, are contemplated. Motion information, in conjunction with range information and communications, can be used for accurate localization and tracking of mobile nodes. A novel partitioning of the sensor fusion problem is presented, which combines an extended Kalman filter for dead-reckoning and particle filters for aiding navigation.

Book Description
The desire for precise knowledge about the location of a moving object at any time instant has motivated a great deal of scientific research recently. This is owing to a steady expansion of the range of enabling devices and technologies, as well as the need for seamless solutions for location-based services. Besides localization accuracy, a common requirement for emerging solutions is that they are cost-abstemious, both in terms of the financial and computational cost. Hence, development of localization strategies from already deployed technologies, e.g., from different terrestrial radio frequency sources is of great practical interest. Amongst other, these include localization strategies based on received signal strength (RSS), time of arrival, angle of arrival (AoA) or a combination of them. RSS-AoA-based Target Localization and Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks presents recent advances in developing algorithms for target localization and tracking, reflecting the state-of-the-art algorithms and research achievements in target localization and tracking based on hybrid (RSS-AoA) measurements.Technical topics discussed in the book include:Centralized RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationDistributed RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Maximum A Posteriori EstimatorRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Kalman FilterRSS-AoA-based via Sensor NavigationThis book is of interest for personnel in telecommunications and surveillance industries, military, smart systems, as well as academic staff and postgraduate/research students in telecommunications, signal processing, and non-smooth and convex optimization.

Indoor Cooperative Localization for Ultra Wideband Wireless Sensor Networks

Indoor Cooperative Localization for Ultra Wideband Wireless Sensor Networks PDF Author: Nayef Alsindi

Book Description
Abstract (Partial): In this dissertation, we first present the results of measurement and modeling of UWB TOA-based ranging in different indoor multipath environments. We provide detailed characterization of the spatial behavior of ranging, where we focus on the statistics of the ranging error in the presence and absence of the DP and evaluate the pathloss behavior in the former case which is important for indoor geolocation coverage characterization. Parameters of the ranging error probability distributions and pathloss models are provided for different environments: traditional office, modern office, residential and manufacturing floor; and different ranging scenarios: indoor-to-indoor (ITI), outdoor-to-indoor (OTI) and roof-to-indoor (RTI). Based on the developed empirical models of UWB TOA-based OTI and ITI ranging, we derive and analyze cooperative localization bounds for WSNs in the different indoor multipath environments. First, we highlight the need for cooperative localization in indoor applications. Then we provide comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting localization accuracy such as network and ranging model parameters. Finally we introduce a novel distributed cooperative localization algorithm for indoor WSNs. The Cooperative LOcalization with Quality of estimation (CLOQ) algorithm integrates and disseminates the quality of the TOA ranging and position information in order to improve the localization performance for the entire WSN. The algorithm has the ability to reduce the effects of the cluttered indoor environments by identifying and mitigating the associated ranging errors. In addition the information regarding the integrity of the position estimate is further incorporated in the iterative distributed localization process which further reduces error escalation in the network. The simulation results of CLOQ algorithm are then compared against the derived G-CRLB, which shows substantial improvements in the localization performance.

Node Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks

Node Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks PDF Author: Xue Zhang

Book Description
In sensor network applications, measured data are often meaningful only when the location is accurately known. In this booklet, we study research problems associated with node localization in wireless sensor networks. We describe sensor network localization problems in terms of a detection and estimation framework and we emphasize specifically a cooperative process where sensors with known locations are used to localize nodes at unknown locations. In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. In addition to the broader problem of sensor localization, this booklet studies also specific localization measurements such as time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), and direction of arrival (DOA). The sequential localization algorithm, which uses a subset of sensor nodes to estimate nearby sensor nodes' locations is discussed in detail. Extensive bibliography is given for those readers who want to delve further into specific topics.

A Semidefinite Programming Approach to Distance-based Cooperative Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks

A Semidefinite Programming Approach to Distance-based Cooperative Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks PDF Author: Ning Wang

Book Description
ABSTRACT: Semidefinite programming (SDP) approach has been widely used to convert nonconvex problems into convex ones in recent years. In this thesis, we apply the SDP approach to cooperative localization where inter-target communication capability is exploited for the purpose of coverage extension and accuracy enhancement. Rank-d Time-of-Arrival (ToA) Minimax Component-wise SDP (CSDP) and rank-d Received Signal Strength (RSS) Minimax CSDP algorithms are proposed. Compared to Standard SDP (SSDP), semidefinite cones of CSDP are thoroughly decentralized. Rank-d and rank-N algorithms are compared, showing that rank-d algorithms are more suitable for cooperative localization. With rank-d scheme, SSDP, Edge-based SDP (ESDP), Node-based SDP (NSDP) and CSDP algorithms are compared and analyzed for both ToA and RSS metrics, demonstrating that CSDP can achieve satisfying accuracy with reasonable complexity. Finally, we propose a virtual anchor concept to further improve the localization accuracy, especially in the outside-of-the-convex-hull situations.
