In a market-oriented economy, the terms of contract are frequently weighted in favor of persons of large means. Cooperatives are institutional agencies that assist in the achievement of social cohesion. Basically, the purpose is to evolve a system of cooperative community organization which touches upon all aspects of life. Credit cooperatives in India make up one of the largest rural financial systems in the world. Playing a vital role in dispensing credit in largely agricultural areas, they are also the weakest link in the formal credit delivery system.
