Book Description
Excerpt from Contributions From the Department of Anatomy, 1922-1923, Vol. 8 Of the eighty-two guinea - pigs used in this study seventy-four were reared in the laboratory, from sixteen females and two males obtained locally. These breeding animals were all large and healthy. The other eight were all adults over 700 grams obtained from other local sources, and are represented by the following body weights: 790, 835, 910, and 927 grams (males) and 807, 810, 852, and 997 grams (females). Four of the females in the upper portion of the series were found at autopsy to be in early stages of pregnancy. These weighed as follows: 807, 852, 907, and 997 grams. The pregnancies apparently did not alter to any notable extent the weight of any of the organs studied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies From the Department of Physiology, Vol. 8: October, 1922 One point still remains to be discussed; that is, the bearing of the results with histamine upon the effects following occlusion of difierent vascular areas. The optical curves Show features in common, each presenting changes indicative of initial failure of normal dynamic relations. It might appear, therefore, that the occlusion efi'ects were caused by metabolic products with histamine - like action formed during the periods of stasis. There seems little doubt that such prod ucts may contribute to the effects of occlusion, but that they are not the main cause is evidenced, I believe, by the relatively large amounts of histamine necessary to initiate failure changes and by the observa tion recorded above that during the periods of reestablished circulation through the occluded part there are never indications of a dilating sub stance being carried into the general circulation. The Ego and the Id

The Ego and the Id PDF Author: Sigmund Freud
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1945186933
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 84

Book Description
“Many major ideas have been borne out [of his theories] and are still relevant today.” —Huffington Post One of famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s most prominent ideas was that of the id, the ego, and the super-ego—the three main factors behind the workings of the human mind. Freud claimed these components of the human psyche controlled all processes of personality, behaviors, and traits in a person. The Id was a person’s most basic and impulsive instincts—the ones that feed into our deepest desires and physical needs. The Super-Ego was the opposite of the id. This component controlled our highest morals and standards, operating through our conscience and making us desire to be our most ideal-selves. The piece in the middle is the Ego. The ego mediates between the id and realities of the world around us, while being supervised (and guilted) by the super-ego. In this new edition of his book, The Ego and the Id, Sigmund Freud delves deeper into the concepts of the human mind and the results of the conflicts and workings between them.

The Discovery of Insulin

The Discovery of Insulin PDF Author: Michael Bliss
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487516746
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
The discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto in 1921-22 was one of the most dramatic events in the history of the treatment of disease. Insulin was a wonder-drug with ability to bring patients back from the very brink of death, and it was no surprise that in 1923 the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to its discoverers, the Canadian research team of Banting, Best, Collip, and Macleod. In this engaging and award-winning account, historian Michael Bliss recounts the fascinating story behind the discovery of insulin – a story as much filled with fiery confrontation and intense competition as medical dedication and scientific genius. Originally published in 1982 and updated in 1996, The Discovery of Insulin has won the City of Toronto Book Award, the Jason Hannah Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, and the William H. Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine.
