LA MESURE DE LA FONCTION DE DISTRIBUTION INITIALE DES MASSES STELLAIRES (IMF) PERMET D'APPORTER DES CONTRAINTES SUR LES SCENARIOS DE FORMATION DE LA GALAXIE. LES AMAS GLOBULAIRES ET OUVERTS PERMETTENT DE DEDUIRE UNE MESURE FIABLE DE L'IMF D'UNE POPULATION D'AGE ET DE METALLICITE UNIFORMES. AFIN DE SIMULER DES DIAGRAMMES HERTZSPRUNG-RUSSELL (HR) REALISTES D'AMAS, NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE UNE MODELISATION DE L'EFFET DES BINAIRES AINSI QUE DE LA ROTATION, INGREDIENTS RELATIVEMENT NEGLIGES JUSQU'A PRESENT. IL EXISTE ASSEZ PEU DE TENTATIVES D'EXPLOITATION DES SYSTEMES BINAIRES BIEN DETACHES COMME TESTS DE L'EVOLUTION STELLAIRE ALORS QU'ILS CONSTITUENT DE BONS EXEMPLES D'ETOILES COEVALES. NOUS AVONS DANS CE BUT ISOLE DES ECHANTILLONS DE BINAIRES A LA FOIS DANS LES POPULATIONS DU CHAMP ET DANS LES AMAS OUVERTS. LES TESTS DE 3 MODELES D'EVOLUTION STELLAIRE (EN PRENANT EN COMPTE LES RESULTATS HIPPARCOS) ONT CONDUIT A LES VALIDER AVEC CEPENDANT QUELQUES RESTRICTIONS. EN OUTRE, NOUS APPORTONS DES PREDICTIONS SUR LES AGES ET METALLICITES DES COMPOSANTES D'UNE SOIXANTAINE DE BINAIRES DU CHAMP, QUI NOUS PERMETTENT D'ECARTER L'EXISTENCE D'UNE RELATION AGE-METALLICITE BIEN DEFINIE DANS LE DISQUE. AFIN DE MODELISER L'EFFET DE LA ROTATION STELLAIRE DANS UN DIAGRAMME HR, NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE 2 METHODES (DISTRIBUTION OBSERVEE DE V SIN I ET MODELES THEORIQUES). LE RESULTAT PRINCIPAL EST LA MISE EN EVIDENCE D'UN BIAIS SYSTEMATIQUE SUR LES ESTIMATIONS D'AGES DEDUITES A PARTIR DE L'AJUSTEMENT CONVENTIONNEL DES ISOCHRONES SANS ROTATION : LES AGES DES AMAS OUVERTS ONT ETE SYSTEMATIQUEMENT SURESTIMES. LA COMPARAISON DE NOS SIMULATIONS AVEC DES DIAGRAMMES OBSERVES PERMET DE TESTER STATISTIQUEMENT L'HYPOTHESE QUE LES 2 DIAGRAMMES, SYNTHETIQUES ET OBSERVES, SONT ISSUS DE LA MEME POPULATION. POUR CELA NOUS AVONS MIS EN PLACE DE NOUVELLES TECHNIQUES BAYESIENNES DE MESURE DE L'IMF. CETTE NOUVELLE METHODE PERMET EGALEMENT D'APPORTER DES CONTRAINTES SUR LA FRACTION DE BINAIRES DANS LES AMAS OUVERTS ET GLOBULAIRES.

Quantum Mechanics, Volume 3

Quantum Mechanics, Volume 3 PDF Author: Claude Cohen-Tannoudji
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527345558
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 790

Book Description
This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

The X-ray Universe

The X-ray Universe PDF Author: Wallace H. Tucker
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Beyond the range of optical perception--and of ordinary imaginings--a new and violent universe lay undetected until the advent of space exploration. Supernovae, black holes, quasars and pulsars--these were the secrets of the highenergy world revealed when, for the first time, astronomers attached their instruments to rockets and lofted them beyond the earth's x-ray-absorbing atmosphere. The X-Ray Universe is the story of these explorations and the fantastic new science they brought into being. It is a first-hand account: Riccardo Giacconi is one of the principal pioneers of the field, and Wallace Tucker is a theorist who worked closely with him at many critical periods. The book carries the reader from the early days of the Naval Research Laboratory through the era of V-2 rocketry, Sputnik, and the birth of NASA, to the launching of the Einstein X-Ray Observatory. But this is by no means just a history. Behind the suspenseful, sometimes humorous details of human personality grappling with high technology lies a sophisticated exposition of current cosmology and astrophysics, from the rise and fall of the steady-state theory to the search for the missing mass of the universe.

Principles of Stellar Dynamics

Principles of Stellar Dynamics PDF Author: S. Chandrasekhar
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 048644273X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
In this classic text, a Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist presents the theory of stellar dynamics as a branch of classical dynamics--a discipline in the same general category as celestial mechanics. His method offers the advantages of clarifying the theory's fundamental issues and defining its underlying motivations. S. Chandrasekhar investigates two areas. The first concerns problems in which the time of relaxation of a stellar system is central. His method consists of analyzing the effects of stellar encounters in terms of the two-body problem of classical dynamics and applying this theory to the dynamics of star clusters. The second area investigates problems centering around Liouville's theorem and the solutions of the equation of continuity; here, the author discusses the dynamic implications of the existence of a field of differential motions, which appears to be the most striking kinematic feature of the galaxy and the extragalactic systems. This edition includes two papers by the author that were published after Principles of Stellar Dynamics and that have been studied and quoted extensively: "New Methods in Stellar Dynamics" (originally published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences) and "Dynamical Friction" (originally published in The Astrophysical Journal).
