Reactive Transport in Natural and Engineered Systems

Reactive Transport in Natural and Engineered Systems PDF Author: Jennifer Druhan
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 1501512005
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 550

Book Description
Open system behavior is predicated on a fundamental relationship between the timescale over which mass is transported and the timescale over which it is chemically transformed. This relationship describes the basis for the multidisciplinary field of reactive transport (RT). In the 20 years since publication of Review in Mineralogy and Geochemistry volume 34: Reactive Transport in Porous Media, RT principles have expanded beyond early applications largely based in contaminant hydrology to become broadly utilized throughout the Earth Sciences. RT is now employed to address a wide variety of natural and engineered systems across diverse spatial and temporal scales, in tandem with advances in computational capability, quantitative imaging and reactive interface characterization techniques. The present volume reviews the diversity of reactive transport applications developed over the past 20 years, ranging from the understanding of basic processes at the nano- to micrometer scale to the prediction of Earth global cycling processes at the watershed scale. Key areas of RT development are highlighted to continue advancing our capabilities to predict mass and energy transfer in natural and engineered systems.

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VIII - Hyperbolic, Elliptic and Parabolic Problems

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VIII - Hyperbolic, Elliptic and Parabolic Problems PDF Author: Clément Cancès
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319573942
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 530

Book Description
This book is the second volume of proceedings of the 8th conference on "Finite Volumes for Complex Applications" (Lille, June 2017). It includes reviewed contributions reporting successful applications in the fields of fluid dynamics, computational geosciences, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory and other topics. The finite volume method in its various forms is a space discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation, and recent decades have brought significant advances in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete l evel. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. The book is useful for researchers, PhD and master’s level students in numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations, as well as for engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations.

Adsorption: Fundamental Processes and Applications PDF Author: Mehrorang Ghaedi
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128188081
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 732

Book Description
Adsorption: Fundamental Processes and Applications, Volume 33 in the Interface Science and Technology Series, discusses the great technological importance of adsorption and describes how adsorbents are used on a large scale as desiccants, catalysts, catalyst supports, in the separation of gases, the purification of liquids, pollution control, and in respiratory protection. Finally, it explores how adsorption phenomena play a vital role in many solid-state reactions and biological mechanisms, as well as stressing the importance of the widespread use of adsorption techniques in the characterization of surface properties and the texture of fine powders. - Covers the fundamental aspects of adsorption process engineering - Reviews the environmental impact of key aquatic pollutants - Discusses and analyzes the importance of adsorption processes for water treatment - Highlights opportunity areas for adsorption process intensification - Edited by a world-leading researcher in interface science

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications PDF Author: Fayssal Benkhaldoun
Publisher: Kogan Page Limited
ISBN: 9782866015565
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 738

Book Description
Scientific computing, which involves the analysis of complex systems in real applications with numerical simulations, is becoming an important field of research in itself, in relation to theoretical investigations and physical experiments. In many cases, the underlying mathematical models consist of large systems of partial differential equations, which have to be solved with high accuracy and efficiency. Among the successful methods, in particular for discretizations on unstructured grids, are the Finite Volume schemes. The first symposium of the series was held in Rouen in 1996.

Advances in Hydroinformatics

Advances in Hydroinformatics PDF Author: Philippe Gourbesville
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9812876154
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 616

Book Description
This book is a collection of extended papers based on presentations given during the SIMHYDRO 2014 conference, held in Sophia Antipolis in June 2014. It focuses on the modeling and simulation of fast hydraulic transients, on 3D modeling, and on uncertainties and multiphase flows. The book explores both the limitations and performance of current models and presents the latest developments based on new numerical schemes, high-performance computing, multiphysics and multiscale methods, and better interaction with field or scale model data. It addresses the interests of practitioners, stakeholders, researchers and engineers active in this field.
