Book Description
Two female German theologians bear witness to their lifelong struggle for a groundbreaking reform of the position of women in the Roman Catholic Church. Ever since Vatican Council II they have been committed to a renewed church where women may use their talents in ordained ministry to serve the people of God. They describe the gender discrimination they faced in acquiring their theological educations, the courageous steps they have taken in recent years to respond to their priestly callings and to help other gifted women do the same. These are two intertwined autobiographies, enriched by an appendix with noteworthy historic documents from the 1960's to the present day, including correspondence with Professors Joseph Ratzinger and Karl Rahner.

Womanpriest

Womanpriest PDF Author: Jill Peterfeso
Publisher: Fordham University Press
ISBN: 0823288293
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
This book is openly available in digital formats thanks to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. While some Catholics and even non-Catholics today are asking if priests are necessary, especially given the ongoing sex-abuse scandal, The Roman Catholic Womanpriests (RCWP) looks to reframe and reform Roman Catholic priesthood, starting with ordained women. Womanpriest is the first academic study of the RCWP movement. As an ethnography, Womanpriest analyzes the womenpriests’ actions and lived theologies in order to explore ongoing tensions in Roman Catholicism around gender and sexuality, priestly authority, and religious change. In order to understand how womenpriests navigate tradition and transgression, this study situates RCWP within post–Vatican II Catholicism, apostolic succession, sacraments, ministerial action, and questions of embodiment. Womanpriest reveals RCWP to be a discrete religious movement in a distinct religious moment, with a small group of tenacious women defying the Catholic patriarchy, taking on the priestly role, and demanding reconsideration of Roman Catholic tradition. Doing so, the women inhabit and re-create the central tensions in Catholicism today.

Perspectives on International Law

Perspectives on International Law PDF Author: Nandasiri Jasentuliyana
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004639764
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 578

Book Description
In the spirit of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations and the United Nations Decade of International Law, the contributors to Perspectives on International Law honour with this legal treatise a devoted friend of the United Nations and international law, Judge Manfred Lachs - a noted judge, diplomat, humanist and, above all, teacher. The work includes a variety of perspectives on international law relating to what were Judge Lachs' four main areas of interest: the theory and practice of international law, the United Nations, the World Court, and space law. The book meets the need for a reference work covering selected subject areas and providing different perspectives on some of the key issues of current concern. Many eminent experts in various fields related to international law, including Judges of the International Court of Justice, diplomats, and professors of law - most of whom knew Judge Lachs personally - have contributed. Each chapter has been prepared specifically for the book. The contributors represent all political, legal and cultural regions of the world and provide a range of backgrounds and viewpoints, offering a variety of new ideas for strengthening international law, based on their assessment of the lessons of the past.

Towards Recognition of Minority Groups

Towards Recognition of Minority Groups PDF Author: Marek Zirk-Sadowski
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317008898
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 295

Book Description
This volume analyses current debates concerning problems in the nature, justification, and legal protection of human rights for minorities, with reference to the issues surrounding social milieu as a source of any legitimized law, which is in itself in need of legal recognition as well as being an object of legal protection. With contributions from a global network of scientists across several continents, the work examines the debate dedicated to the understanding of the normative framework, expressed in terms of human rights that guarantee autonomous action in public and private for minority groups as well as individuals. The chapters go on to study the particular claims that need to be audible and visible for others in the public sphere with reference to the legal protection of human rights. The work concludes with the completion of an interpretative circle debating the issues of legal consensus and legal identity with respect to the specificity of the patterns and modes guiding human interactions. Going beyond the legal analysis to discuss communication strategies in human rights, this collection will be of great interest to those studying the philosophy and theory of law, practical philosophy in general, political sciences and theory of democracy.
