Multicultural literature produced in the mid-20th century has been criticized for reducing its protagonists to stereotypes, portraying the migrant as victim, and focusing excessively on conflict of an intercultural or intra-cultural nature. The works of many Turkish-German authors, such as Dilek Gungor and Aras Oren, have revised the immigrant narrative by not foregrounding the conflicts of alterity. These contemporary narratives focus on a more universal, more everyday experience where first-generation immigrants and their German-born children struggle with their unique circumstances. Young Turkish-Germans seek out paths of their own design, while mainstream German society and traditional Turks look askance at their audacity. This new perspective reveals life within, as well as between, the two cultures to be much more varied, fluid and less confrontational than political rhetoric would have us believe. Countering claims of German intolerance and insular Moslem immigrants, contemporary Turkish-German authors and film-makers are evidence of underlying currents of functional co-existence and cultural exchange. Recent decades have witnessed the emergence of a younger generation of Turkish directors intent on breaking away from this cinema of the affected. This emergent vein of cosmopolitanism is reflected in the work of female Turkish-Austrian director Feo Aladag, as well as celebrated Turkish-German director Fatih Akin, whose films go beyond attempts by earlier filmmakers associated with the New German Cinema to represent accurately the realities of living within two cultures. These contemporary directors have moved on to explore the various paths open to those of mixed ethnicity, to those living within but not wholly part of German society, to those who have severed their ties to tradition completely: crime, adaptation or return, or the search for self-determination.

This dissertation undertakes an interdisciplinary investigation of recent Turkish-German literature and film. Focusing on the motif of travel, it analyzes the ways in which novels and feature films since unification have constructed notions of identity and borders, self and other, of Turkey, Germany, and the fluid boundaries between these ostensibly separate worlds. In doing so, the dissertation takes as its point of departure Leslie Adelson's powerful 2003 critique of texts and approaches that would suspend Turkish-German subjects "between two worlds," separating them from German culture rather than situating them in the complex, hybrid realities of both Turkey and Germany today. With their emphasis on travel and movement, I claim, novels and films since unification mark a departure from earlier forms of Gastarbeiterliteratur and -film and have contributed significantly to unsettling the troublesome paradigm of a static "in-between." To trace this shift, chapter one analyzes two novels that narrate the travels of German protagonists in Turkey. I show how both Selim oder Die Gabe der Rede (1990) by Sten Nadolny and Der weinende Granatapfel (1990) by Alev Tekinay, first mobilize the premises of the "two worlds" paradigm at the level of character and then undo those premises through narration. Chapter two analyzes the novels Selam Berlin (2003) by Yade Kara and Die Brücke vom Goldenen Horn (1998) by Emine Sevgi Özdamar. Mapping their protagonists' transformations onto socio-political transitions in Turkey and Germany, the novels destabilize presumed borders and chart connections between Turkey and Germany. The third chapter studies bi-directional journeys in Fatih Akin's films, Head-On (2004) and The Edge of Heaven (2007). With Turks, Jews, and Other Germans in Contemporary Art, Peter Chametzky presents a view of visual culture in Germany that leaves behind the usual suspects--those artists who dominate discussions of contemporary German art, including Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, and Rosemarie Trockel--and instead turns to those artists not as well known outside Germany, including Maziar Moradi, Hito Steyerl, and Tanya Ury. In this first book-length examination of Germany's multicultural art scene, Chametzky explores the work of more than thirty German artists who are (among other ethnicities) Turkish, Jewish, Arab, Asian, Iranian, Sinti and Roma, Balkan, and Afro-German. With a title that echoes Peter Gay's 1978 collection of essays, Freud, Jews and Other Germans, this book, like Gay's, rejects the idea of "us" and "them" in German culture. Migration, asylum, and citizenship have become unavoidable topics in contemporary European politics. Klopp examines the issues of immigration, integration, and multiculturalism in Germany, Europe's premier immigration country, through the perspectives of both immigrants and local institutions (unions, employers, schools, neighborhoods, and city government). Klopp addresses the potential for immigration patterns and increasing heterogeneity to produce the conditions for social transformation, and specifically he shows how these factors are challenging and gradually transforming the boundaries of citizenship and the nation in Germany. Theoretically he argues against recent models of postnational and transnational membership that claim that the nationstate model of citizenship has been superseded by a new type of membership, one that guarantees individual rights via international human rights norms. Given the claims of these models, we should expect that long-term resident aliens will be satisfied with the partial citizenshp rights (civil and social) extended to them by liberal European welfare states, and that they will not identify with, or seek political rights from, their state of residence. On the contrary, Klopps suggests that national-state citizenship remains the essential form of formal social and political inclusion for the majority of immigrants. In the past Germany has represented an extreme case of ethnocultural exclusion, and it is therefore something of a natural laboratory in which to examine the reciprocal measures and mechanisms of political and social change currently underway in Europe. Lessons learned from qualitative empirical examination of immigration and integration processes in Germany could prove instructive when compared to similar processes of transformation underway in the other tranditonal nation-states of Western Europe and in the efforts to define a common European identity. Provocative reading for scholars, students, and other researchers as well as policy makers involved with migration issues, comparative politics and citizenship, and contemporary German studies.

Illuminates tensions and transformations in today's Germany by examining literary, filmic, and musical treatments of the ghetto metaphor. Accounts of how Germany has changed since unification often portray the Berlin Republic as a new Germany that has left the Nazi past and Cold War division behind and entered the new millennium as a peaceful, worldly, and cautiously proud nation. Closer inspection, however, reveals tensions between such views and the realities of a country that continues to struggle with racism, provincialism, and fear of the perceived Other. Mainstream media foster such fears by describing violence in ghetto schools, failed integration, and the loss of society's core values. The city emerges as a key site not only of ethnic and political tension but of social change. Maria Stehle illuminates these tensions and transformations by following the metaphor of the ghetto in literary works from the 1990s by Feridun Zaimoglu, in German ghettocentric films from the late 1990s and the early twenty-first century, and in hip-hop and rap music of the same periods. In their representations of ghettos, authors, filmmakers, musicians, and performers redefine and challenge provincialism and nationalism and employ transcultural frameworks for their diverging political agendas. By contextualizing these discussions within social and political developments, this study illuminates the complexities that define Germany today for scholars and students across the disciplines of German, European, cultural, urban, and media studies.
