Southern Spirits

Southern Spirits PDF Author: Robert F. Moss
Publisher: Ten Speed Press
ISBN: 1607748681
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
A captivating narrative history that traces liquor, beer, and wine drinking in the American South, including 40 cocktail recipes. Ask almost anyone to name a uniquely Southern drink, and bourbon and mint juleps--perhaps moonshine--are about the only beverages that come up. But what about rye whiskey, Madeira wine, and fine imported Cognac? Or peach brandy, applejack, and lager beer? At various times in the past, these drinks were as likely to be found at the Southern bar as barrel-aged bourbon and raw corn likker. The image of genteel planters in white suits sipping mint juleps on the veranda is a myth that never was--the true picture is far more complex and fascinating. Southern Spirits is the first book to tell the full story of liquor, beer, and wine in the American South. This story is deeply intertwined with the region, from the period when British colonists found themselves stranded in a new world without their native beer, to the 21st century, when classic spirits and cocktails of the pre-Prohibition South have come back into vogue. Along the way, the book challenges the stereotypes of Southern drinking culture, including the ubiquity of bourbon and the geographic definition of the South itself, and reveals how that culture has shaped the South and America as a whole.

Myth and Mentality

Myth and Mentality PDF Author: Anna-Leena Siikala
Publisher: Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura
ISBN: 9522228494
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
The recent fascination in Finnish folklore studies with popular thought and the values and emotions encoded in oral tradition began with the realisation that the vast collections of the Finnish folklore archives still have much to offer the modern-day researcher. These archive materials were not only collected by scholars, but also by the ordinary rural populace interested in their own traditions, by performers and their audiences. With its myriad voices, this body of source material thus provides new avenues for the researcher seeking to penetrate popular thought. What does oral tradition tell us about the way its performers think and feel? What sorts of beliefs and ideas are transmitted in traditional songs and narratives? Perspectives from the study of mentalities and cultural cognition research provide a framework for investigating these issues. This collection of articles works from the premise that the cultural models which shape mentalities give rise to manifest expressions of culture, including folklore. These models also become embedded in the representations appearing in folklore, and are handed down from one generation to the next. The topics of the book cover age-old myths and world views, concepts of witchcraft and the Devil stretching back to the Middle Ages, and the values and collective emotions of Finnish and Hungarian agrarian communities.

Underage Drinking:

Underage Drinking: PDF Author: Rameshwar N Bhardwaj PhD
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1698701772
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
Early onset of Drinking is a major public health concern facing countries. Early initiation is considered as a marker of alcohol dependence and other substance abuse in later years of life. Heavy episodic alcohol use (Binge drinking) in adolescence diminishes their educational attainment by affecting brain structure, brain functioning, and neuropsychological performance. Beyond health consequences, the harmful use of alcohol brings significant social and economic losses to individuals and society at large. The empirical results obtained in our study suggest that binge pattern of drinking and the spirits contents in the alcoholic beverage exert a positive and significant influence on Alcohol-Attributable Fractions. Factors that interfere with the evidence-based prevention strategies include corporate lobbying, lack of political will, and weak enforcement of public regulations. There is a need for countries to revisit their alcohol control policies and assess the gap between the evidence-based prevention science and implementation in practice.
