Construir la periferia: Procesos, mecanismos y derechos en la ciudad de borde plantea una aproximación crítica al proceso de construcción de la ciudad y las relaciones establecidas entre las distintas dimensiones –económicas, políticas, simbólicas, territoriales– y los actores que ocupan posiciones diferenciadas en la reproducción de sus vidas. La construcción del espacio, entendida como parte de la reproducción social, ha sido examinada desde la perspectiva de la diferenciación socioespacial del territorio. De esta manera, la mirada planteada pone en cuestionamiento los abordajes clásicos de los temas y problemas urbanos, señalando que los mismos no observan contextualmente a la ciudad y, en ese sentido, los aportes realizados hasta el momento son escasos y poco efectivos para intentar solucionar problemáticas urbanas que se presentan cada vez con mayor intensidad, complejidad y expansión. Comprender las relaciones de reproducción social en el territorio implica adentrarse en las lógicas estructurales que orientan la reproducción del capital. Y en ese proceso participan conjuntamente diferentes actores sociales que modifican las articulaciones entre espacio y sociedad, estableciendo condiciones particulares para la construcción de un territorio que se va configurando de acuerdo a una serie de variables que dependen de la coyuntura. Este enfoque aporta argumentos para una explicación sobre la estructuración del territorio en las últimas décadas.

Twelve global planning and urban design interventions—and what they reveal about equity-centered urban resilience in the face of climate change. Hillside favelas in South America imperiled by landslides. Flood-threatened mobile home parks on the American Gulf Coast. Canal-side settlements facing eviction in megacities in Southeast Asia. Too often the places most vulnerable to climate change are the ones that are home to people with the fewest economic and political resources. And while some leaders are starting to take action to reduce climate risks, many early adaptation schemes have actually made preexisting inequalities worse. In The Equitably Resilient City, Zachary Lamb and Lawrence Vale ask how cities can adapt to climate change and other threats while also doing right by disadvantaged residents. Lamb and Vale’s model for the equitably resilient city includes four central domains: (1) environmental safety and vitality; (2) security from displacement; (3) stable and dignified livelihoods; and (4) enhanced self-governance. These principles represent the four LEGS (Livelihoods, Environment, Governance, and Security) of equitable resilience. To illustrate these core principles, the book draws on 12 case studies from settlements facing a range of hazards across diverse geographies in the Global North and South, from heat stress in Paris to drought in Bolivia to floods in Bangkok and New Orleans. Offering concrete strategies in the form of planning, community action, and design interventions, Lamb and Vale show that equitable urban resilience is not a pipe dream nor an abstract ethical proposition but an achievable reality grounded in struggle and solidarity.

Text and Textuality in Early Medieval Iberia is a study of the functions and conceptions of writing and reading, documentation and archives, and the role of literate authorities in the Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian Peninsula between the Muslim conquest of 711 and the fall of the Islamic caliphate at Córdoba in 1031. Based on the first complete survey of the over 4,000 surviving Latin charters from the period, it is an essay in the archaeology and biography of text: part one concerns materiality, tracing the lifecycle of charters from initiation and composition to preservation and reuse, while part two addresses connectivity, delineating a network of texts through painstaking identification of more than 2,000 citations of other charters, secular and canon law, the Bible, liturgy, and monastic rules. Few may have been able to read or write, yet the extent of textuality was broad and deep, in the authority conferred upon text and the arrangements made to use it. Via charter and scribe, society and social arrangements came increasingly to be influenced by norms originating from a network of texts. By profiling the intersection and interaction of text with society and culture, Graham Barrett reconstructs textuality, how the authority of the written and the structures to access it framed and constrained actions and cultural norms, and proposes a new model of early medieval reading. As they cited other texts, charters circulated fragments of those texts; we must rethink the relationship of sources and audiences to reflect fragmentary transmission, in a textuality of imperfect knowledge.
