Envisioning a Sustainable Society

Envisioning a Sustainable Society PDF Author: Lester W. Milbrath
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438413084
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
The evidence is increasingly persuasive. We are changing the way our planet's physical systems work—irrevocably. These changes are global and interconnected and unavoidable. They are upon us already, making it virtually impossible for any modern society to continue its present trajectory of growth. This book provides a penetrating analysis of how we have come to this point, of why science and technology will fail to solve these problems, and of how we as a society must change in order to avoid ecological catastrophe. The scope is broad, the urgency of the message is impossible to ignore.

When Rights Embrace Responsibilities

When Rights Embrace Responsibilities PDF Author: Giulia Sajeva
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199091897
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
The conservation of environment and the protection of human rights are two of the most compelling needs of our time. Unfortunately, they are not always easy to combine and too often result in mutual harm. This book analyses the idea of biocultural rights as a proposal for harmonizing the needs of environmental and human rights. These rights, considered as a basket of group rights, are those deemed necessary to protect the stewardship role that certain indigenous peoples and local communities have played towards the environment. With a view to understanding the value and merits, as well as the threats that biocultural rights entail, the book critically assesses their foundations, content, and implications, and develops new perspectives and ideas concerning their potential applicability for promoting the socio-economic interests of indigenous people and local communities. It further explores the controversial relationship of interdependence and conflict between conservation of environment and protection of human rights.

Developing the Next Generation of Conservation Leaders

Developing the Next Generation of Conservation Leaders PDF Author: Nathaniel Blood

Book Description
This project examined the Student Climate and Conservation Congress (SC3), a joint educational effort between the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Green Schools Alliance. It examined the effect of SC3 on variables identified in the literature as influencing environmentally responsible behavior. These variables included perceived environmental knowledge, perceived knowledge of citizen participation and action strategies, perceived action skills, environmental attitudes, locus of control, personal responsibility, and intention to act. Furthermore, it explored whether or not these variables could be used to predict environmental action and continued commitment to conservation action. Perceived environmental knowledge, perceived knowledge of citizen participation and action strategies, perceived action skills, environmental attitudes, locus of control, and personal responsibility increased after participation in the program. Locus of control was found to significantly predict intention to act. None of the variables could be used to predict environmental action or continued commitment to conservation action. However pretest levels of environmental attitudes were significantly related to environmental action, and pretest levels of environmental attitudes and pretest levels of personal responsibility were significantly related to continued commitment to conservation action. In this study, intention for action was not related to action, nor was action related to continued commitment toward environmental action. Program implications and suggestions for future research were generated out of this study's findings.

Heritage Conservation in the United States

Heritage Conservation in the United States PDF Author: John H. Sprinkle, Jr.
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000642003
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Heritage Conservation in the United States begins to trace the growth of the American historic preservation movement over the last 50 years, viewed from the context of the civil rights and environmental movements. The first generation of the New Preservation (1966-1991) was characterized by the establishment of the bureaucratic structures that continue to shape the practice of heritage conservation in the United States. The National Register of Historic Places began with less than a thousand historic properties and grew to over 50,000 listings. Official recognition programs expanded, causing sites that would never have been considered as either significant or physically representative in 1966 now being regularly considered as part of a historic preservation planning process. The book uses the story of how sites associated with African American history came to be officially recognized and valued, and how that process challenged the conventions and criteria that governed American preservation practice. This book is designed for the historic preservation community and students engaged in the study of historic preservation.
