Sharks: Conservation, Governance and Management

Sharks: Conservation, Governance and Management PDF Author: Erika J. Techera
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135012601
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
The key aim of this book is to explore the global conservation and management of sharks. There has been a rapid decline in populations of many shark species, while new science has emerged of the critical role they play in marine ecosystems. However, the authors show that conservation law and policy have been slow to develop, with only a small number of iconic species being protected worldwide. The increase in fishing impact – primarily through shark finning and by-catch - has led to shark conservation receiving greater international attention in recent years. The book explores our current knowledge and status of the law and science in relation to sharks with a particular focus on improving frameworks for their conservation and management. Recent trends are analysed, including shark finning bans that have been put in place in several countries, the widening number of nations establishing shark sanctuaries and the growth of shark-based tourism. The efficacy of current listing processes for endangered species and fisheries regulations is also examined. Tourism is explored as an alternative to fishing and the risks and impacts associated with this industry are analysed. Contributors include leading authorities from universities and conservation organizations in North America, Europe and Australia. A common theme is to emphasise the importance of collaborative governance between various interest groups and the need for inter-disciplinary research and management approaches that are necessary to address the decline in sharks.

Sharks of the Open Ocean

Sharks of the Open Ocean PDF Author: Merry D. Camhi
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1444302523
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 536

Book Description
This important and exciting title represents the first authoritative volume focussed on pelagic (open ocean) sharks as a group. Virtually every pelagic shark expert in the world has contributed to this landmark publication which includes the latest data and knowledge on pelagic shark biology, fisheries, management, and conservation. Pelagic sharks face unprecedented levels of exploitation in all the world's oceans through both direct fisheries and by-catch, and effective management for these species is contingent upon solid science and data, which this book brings together for the first time. All those involved in shark biology will need to have a copy of this book.

Managing Shark Fisheries

Managing Shark Fisheries PDF Author: Michael L. Weber
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
This report, a joint project of the Center for Marine Conservation and TRAFFIC International, regarding existing international agreements that may promote the conservation of sharks. The report analyses several existing international fisheries regimes, and identifies gaps in the conservation of sharks. Gaps are of two general types - geographical and functional gaps. A comparison of the range of key species of sharks with the jurisdiction of existing fisheries management regimes reveals large gaps in some areas.

Sharks in Danger

Sharks in Danger PDF Author: Rachel Cunningham-Day
Publisher: Universal-Publishers
ISBN: 1581126522
Category : Science

This book outlines why sharks are a valuable resource, identifies threats to sharks and where they occur and reviews what we need to know about sharks in order to protect them. Fisheries management procedures are investigated to target areas requiring future research and implementation. Conservation initiatives, legislation, and international agreements are reviewed and future measures suggested. Whale Sharks

Whale Sharks PDF Author: Alistair D.M. Dove
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351334751
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
Whale sharks are the largest of all fishes, fascinating for comparative studies of all manner of biological fields, including functional anatomy, growth, metabolism, movement ecology, behavior and physiology. These gentle ocean giants have captured the interest of scientists and the imagination of the public, yet their future is uncertain. The conservation status of whale sharks was upgraded to Endangered on the IUCN Red List and the species faces a range of intense threats from human activities. Can these iconic living animals, who have survived for millions of years, survive us? Written by the world’s leading experts in whale shark biology, ecology, and conservation, Whale Sharks: Biology, Ecology and Conservation is the first definitive volume about the world's biggest fish. Chapters include discussions of satellite-linked tags, used to track whale shark movements; genetic sequencing, to examine evolutionary adaptations; even the use of underwater ultrasound units to investigate the species’ reproduction. The editors hope that by collating what is known, they can make it easier for future researchers, conservationists, and resource managers to fill some of the remaining knowledge gaps, and provide the information they need to join the team. As you work your way through this book, we hope that you will develop a sense of awe and marvel at all of our good fortune to share the ocean, and the planet, with this utterly extraordinary species.

Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management

Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management PDF Author: Sarah L. Fowler
Publisher: IUCN
ISBN: 9782831706504
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.
