Book Description
Excerpt from Conscience and Criticism It has been the first desire of the author in writing this book to lessen the unnecessary opposition which commonly manifests itself between those radically are agreed in Christian Faith. Religion is so often attended by controversy, that men are much more aware of the points in which they differ than of those which they hold in common. Whenever, therefore, a person can adopt the attitude of sympathy with both sides, he may well wish to speak if he thinks that he can show the agreement to be far more important than the difference. The particular subject of controversy which now stirs thoughts and desires of this kind goes by the name of Higher Criticism. We have come to a time when religious people are beginning - but, in general, only beginning - to understand that such criticism is not always intentionally hostile to Christianity. They still believe, however, that in its own nature it undermines Christian security. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Category : Philosophy

Book Description
Excerpt from The Nature and Authority of Conscience The Swarthmore Lectureship was established by the Woodbrooke Extension Committee, at a meeting held December 9th, 1907: the minute of the Committee providing for "an annual lecture on some subject relating to the message and work of the Society of Friends." The name "Swarthmore" was chosen in memory of the home of Margaret Fox, which was always open to the earnest seeker after Truth, and from which loving words of sympathy and substantial material help were sent to fellow-workers. The Lectureship has a two-fold purpose: first, to interpret further to the members of the Society of Friends their Message and Mission; and, secondly, to bring before the public the spirit, the aims and the fundamental principles of the Friends. The Lectures have been delivered on the evening preceding the assembly of the Friends' Yearly Meeting in each year. The present Lecture was delivered on the evening preceding the Conference of all Friends in August, 1920. A complete list of previous Lectures, as published in book form, will be found at the beginning of this volume. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tender Conscience It was not until eight o'clock that the sunshine reached this place, for in that corner the orchard was bounded by a thick wall of trees. Then the gossamer was seen to hang the shadows with jewelled skeins, and amongst the grass the dew drops sparkled for a while before they transpired in the fair heat of the May morning. Sure the justice never meant to see ye handled so. Book Description
Excerpt from New Conscience: And an Ancient Evil It is always easy to overwork an analogy, and yet the economist who for years insisted that slave labor continually and arbitrarily limited the wages of free labor and was therefore a detri ment to national wealth was a forerunner of the economist of to-day who points out the economic basis of the social evil, the connection between low wages and despair, between over-fatigue and the demand for reckless pleasure. A Point of Conscience (Classic Reprint)

A Point of Conscience (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Mrs. Hungerford
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331068716

Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
Excerpt from A Point of Conscience 'Affection lights a brighter flame Than ever blazed by art.' 'I Really think we may congratulate ourselves about this governess, ' says Lady Maria, leaning back in her chair, and letting her lovely old hands with her knitting, drop into her lap. 'She seems a most excellent creature.' With Lady Maria most people inferior to herself are 'creatures.' A 'nice' creature, or a 'good' creature, if it happens to be the doctor's or the curate's wife, and she approves of her; an 'excellent' creature, if it be the butler or the governess; whilst a 'worthy' creature does for the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick-maker. 'She's very pretty, ' returned Mrs. Verschoyle, a tall, handsome, fashionable-looking woman of about forty, with touch of humour in her clear grey eyes. It is perhaps this touch of humour that has endeared her so strongly to her mother-in-law, with whom she has lived ever since the death of her husband. Lady Maria's eldest son - a death that took place five years ago, and was so much to these two women of the world that they found it impossible to forget it. 'Oh, pretty!' says Lady Maria, with a shrug. 'What has prettiness to do with it? Beauty is not necessary in one's governess. In fact, I always think that sort of person should be born plain. To be distinctly plain, without being actually repulsive, would be so wise of them!' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
