Road User Charging
Author: Stephen Ison
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 9781138622524
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Due to factors such as congestion and pollution there is increased public and academic interest in road user charging. Until now the debate has focused on the economic theory of road user charging. However, a cogent economic case does not necessarily ensure public acceptance and subsequent implementation. This book seeks to provide an academic account of how such schemes might be implemented. It deals with how the decision-making process should be undertaken in order to secure political and public acceptability. This book bridges the gap between economic theory and public policy making and suggests policy options as a means of combating road traffic congestion in urban areas. The book includes a chapter on the Central London congestion charging scheme detailing the various factors which have resulted in its successful implementation. This is essential reading for academics, advanced students of transport, economics, public policy and the environment, and policy makers at the international, national and local levels.

Congestion Charges. International Experiences and Suggestions for Germany
Author:
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3346441660
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Economy - Transport Economics, grade: 1.0, Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen, language: English, abstract: The congestion problem could be alleviated by switching to more space-efficient means of transport such as local public transport. The majority of cities lack incentive systems that encourage individual users to switch. This paper addresses this problem and discusses the possibility of introducing a price mechanism within the framework of a congestion charge. In the second chapter, transport economic models and the urban modal split are used as the basis. In the second half of the second chapter, congestion is considered as an expression of a collective action problem and possible counter-mechanisms. With regard to the research question, attention is paid to the congestion charge. In the third chapter, the case study method is used to analyse the three cities Stockholm, London and Singapore that have already introduced congestion charges. From the different price models as well as effects on the demand for transport services, recommendations for action for the application in German cities are developed in the fourth chapter. The last chapter contains a critical discussion and a conclusion.

Curbing Gridlock
Author: Transportation Research Board
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN:
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
The Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration requested that the Transportation Research Board and the Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education of the National Research Council conduct a study of congestion pricing for congestion management. To conduct this study, the National Research Council established the Committee for Study on Urban Transportation Congestion Pricing. The committee's deliberations were supplemented by liaison representatives from several groups concerned about the benefits and costs of congestion pricing. After a review of the literature, and drawing from its expertise, the committee commissioned papers on a variety of topics. Volume 1 contains the committee's overview of the material contained in the commissioned papers, its conclusions, and its recommendations regarding the potential of congestion pricing, the need for evaluation of early demonstrations, and other research needs. Volume 2 provides a rich array of information about individual case studies from around the nation and thoughtful analyses by individual scholars about many of the critical issues surrounding congestion pricing., as revised by their authors after the symposium.

Road Charging in the 90s
Author: Beryl Blair
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
The increase in traffic congestion in the last 40 years -- in the UK and overseas -- has been phenomenal. Faced with this problem, governments need to find a way to restrict road use to essential traffic and to raise money to finance new road building. One option adopted by many countries, with varying degrees of success, is the use of toll roads or more complex methods of road charging. This book provides an overview of charging policies and legislation, looking at all the options available and assessing the likely effects on both domestic and commercial traffic. Following an overview of the subject, this guide is divided into two sections: * the legislation and policy behind road charging -- with chapters focusing on the UK and Europe, and on London as a special case, and * recent practice -- with chapters on road charging models and technologies, and on case studies from the UK, Europe, Australia, the Far East, US, and Canada. Each chapter provides both a brief review of the subject and a list of key references for further reading. The guide also contains detailed indexes.
