Book Description
Excerpt from Congal: A Poem, in Five Books As an historic event, the Battle of Moyra is known to have taken place in a.d. 637, and is referred with reasonable certainty to the Tuesday which fell on the 24th of June in that year. I give my adhesion to the views of those who regard it as the expiring effort of the Pagan and Bardic party in Ireland, against the newly-consolidated power of Church and Crown, alleging, for its casus belli, the obligations which Domnal, the then monarch, had incurred to Conga], the dis appointed sub-king of Ulster, as indicated in the Poem. Poet John Hewitt, 1907-1987 and Criticism of Northern Irish Protestant Writing

Poet John Hewitt, 1907-1987 and Criticism of Northern Irish Protestant Writing PDF Author: Sarah Ferris
Publisher: Edwin Mellen Press
ISBN: 9780773472747
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
This study questions the validity of John Hewitt's prominence in Northern Irish Protestant writing and asserts the need for a more accurate history of this genre. Confronting the perceived wisdoms of a highly politicized discourse, it undermines Hewitt's status within it as a matchless, acceptable Protestant for a critically re-visioned Ireland. Challenging the substance of Hewitt's self-representations as icon of cultural liberalism, radical secular dissenter, and verse-apologist for the Planter condition, this book shows that his elevation over the majority of northern Protestants is tenable only within an incomprehensive history of Northern Irish Protestant writing that diminishes other important figures. The study provides a framework for a more equitable study of Protestant voices.

Epic

Epic PDF Author: Herbert F. Tucker
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199232997
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 748

Book Description
Literary history has conventionally viewed Milton as the last real practitioner of the epic in English verse. Herbert Tucker's spirited book shows that the British tradition of epic poetry was unbroken from the French Revolution to World War I.
