Las máquinas herramienta siempre han sido pieza fundamental del vertiginoso espiral de la industrialización. En la medida en que mejoran sus características de precisión y control se hacen más necesarias para la fabricación de cualquier bien. El maquinado de alto rendimiento, una nueva concepción en la industria en donde se combina el maquinado rápido con el de alta precisión (para mayor información, ver anexo A). En el maquinado de alto rendimiento las partes son más costosas, complejas y por lo tanto mucho más difíciles de manufacturar. Por lo tanto, la selección de la apropiada maquinaria, herramental, software de programación y procesos es más crítica en este tipo de aplicaciones [Amone, 1998]. La mejora de la infraestructura de manufactura es una importante actividad dentro del crecimiento de las empresas, y la selección del centro de mecanizado apropiado a los requerimientos de producción juega un papel clave en el crecimiento de la industria de la manufactura [Gopalakrishnan; 2004], así como en el uso racional de sus recursos financieros. La tabla 1 proporciona un resumen acerca de los trabajos realizados referentes al tema de selección de máquinas, organizados tomando en cuenta las siguientes categorías: a) si consideran centros de mecanizado de alto rendimiento, b) si consideran las especificaciones del producto a manufacturar, c) si se permite obtener el precio de la máquina, d) si toma en cuenta o proporciona el costo del producto a manufacturar, e) si considera el tipo de.
