Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : United States
Languages : en
Pages : 1072

Book Description
Volume IV: Compiled and revised by Silas Felton. 1063 pp., revised with books missed in vols. I,II, and III, regimental publications, personal narratives, biographies, campaigns and battles, Northern and Southern. Felton?s new compilation is without peer. He covers the subject from five different perspectives: Regimental Publications and Personal Narratives, Union and Confederate Biographies, General References, Armed Forces and Campaigns and Battles. And, making the work extremely useful, the last 236 pages contain a complete Index of Authors of Volumes I through IV as well as a new Index of Titles in the Revised Volume IV.Furthermore, to clear up confusion created by the multiple names often used by Confederate units during the war ? artillery batteries in particular ? which carried a state designation but were commonly known by the battery commander?s name, Felton has cited a written work with a single number designation but indexed and listed it under its common appellation to aid the researcher and eliminate confusion.

History of Daviess County, Indiana PDF Author: A. O. Fulkerson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780788418402
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 794

Book Description
By 1919, Daviess County in southwest Indiana had 180 years of lively history to record and this voluminous collection of historical facts, opinions, lists, memories, biographies, data, and anecdotes is the result of that undertaking. Drawing from every available resource, this book offers an inclusive picture of life in what began as part of the Northwest Territories. The information is expertly organized and listed in the table of contents that includes general topics such as: Related State History, Physical and Geological Features, Political History, Daviess County at War, Educational History, and Townships. The subsections listed beneath include more specific topics on a myriad of subjects like Pontiac's Conspiracy, Natural Resources, Forts and Block Houses, and Amusements of the Pioneers. Subjects of particular interest include encounters with the Indians, the building of the Wabash and Erie Canal, and a lengthy description of the Underground Railroad including the names of families whose homes served as stations providing food and shelter along its routes. There is obvious pride reflected in the stories of citizens who risked their lives to help slaves reach Canada and freedom. A communal belief in liberty for all men is demonstrated by their service to the Union during the Civil War. This volume includes lists of members of each regiment, where they fought and where their soldiers were wounded or killed. On a more domestic level, the History of Daviess County contains complete lists of every kind of data gatherable from municipal and local resources including census numbers, teachers, auditors, physicians, attorneys, building costs, marriage and divorce records, and members of private organizations like the DAR along with the name of the ancestor who established their eligibility. Biographical sketches of many of the county's distinguished citizens are included.

Women Poets in Ancient Greece and Rome

Women Poets in Ancient Greece and Rome PDF Author: Ellen Greene
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press
ISBN: 9780806136646
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Although Greek society was largely male-dominated, it gave rise to a strong tradition of female authorship. Women poets of ancient Greece and Rome have long fascinated readers, even though much of their poetry survives only in fragmentary form. This pathbreaking volume is the first collection of essays to examine virtually all surviving poetry by Greek and Roman women. It elevates the status of the poems by demonstrating their depth and artistry. Edited and with an introduction by Ellen Greene, the volume covers a broad time span, beginning with Sappho (ca. 630 b.c.e.) in archaic Greece and extending to Sulpicia (first century B.C.E.) in Augustan Rome. In their analyses, the contributors situate the female poets in an established male tradition, but they also reveal their distinctly “feminine” perspectives. Despite relying on literary convention, the female poets often defy cultural norms, speaking in their own voices and transcending their positions as objects of derision in male-authored texts. In their innovative reworkings of established forms, women poets of ancient Greece and Rome are not mere imitators but creators of a distinct and original body of work.
