La conduite hiérarchisée intégrée des ateliers manufacturiers flexibles est une conduite qui prend en compte, au niveau d'un même modèle logico-mathématique, trois objectifs à la fois : optimisation dans la prise de décision, flexibilité décisionnelle et logicielle, intégration d'un maximum d'aspects, notamment les informations. Cette intégration n'est plus simplement informatique, c'est-à-dire qu'elle n'est plus prise en compte simplement au niveau d'entités informatiques de granularité élevée (modules, fichiers, systèmes,...). Pour ce problème, un modèle a été défini et, conjointement, un processus de développement de systèmes basés sur ce modèle a été spécifié. Le modèle est une combinaison des objets et des réseaux de Petri, deux formalismes dont les pouvoirs descriptifs sont complémentaires. Une analyse hors-ligne de la structure du modèle permet de formuler les problèmes de décisions à résoudre en temps réel. Le processus de développement est constitué de quatre phases : modélisation distribuée, intégration, simulation et implantation. Pour la consistance du système de conduite, le processus est itératif et le modèle est le même à travers les différentes phases.
