A condition survey was performed at Locks and Dam No. 3 on the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania to evaluate the concrete condition at the locks and dam, and to make a projection of the concrete condition of selected project features to approximately year 2010. Data from the original construction of the locks, and major rehabilitation of the locks and dam between 1978 and 1980 were evaluated. A visual field investigation was conducted to determine the present concrete condition in the locks. Freezing and thawing of the older nonair-entrained concrete is the major deteriorating mechanism in the structure. A maximum vertical rate of deterioration for exposed original concrete was calculated to be 1.06 in. per year: a horizontal rate of deterioration of 0.90 in. per year was determined with a new concrete overlay serving as low-permeability cover. Where original concrete is exposed on vertical faces, the worst case damage of an additional 32 in. is estimated by the year 2010. Sections of the walls refaced with high quality air-entrained concrete should be serviceable until the year 2010, while local high stress areas may require repairs as deficiencies are formed. (FR).

The results of an engineering condition survey and a structural analysis of Locks and Dam 3, Monongahela River, are given. External cracking of the concrete in the lock walls is extensive. Many horizontal and vertical cracks, although isolated and not fitting into a total failure picture, can result in localized failures, especially in critically stressed regions. The outer 2 to 6 ft of concrete as described in the core and photo logs are highly deteriorated. The same condition probably exists in the outer surface of the walls to lower pool. The internal concrete is generally of adequate strength for current design criteria. One exception is a small zone in the downstream gate monolith of the middle wall; a compressive strength of 1150 psi was obtained on the concrete from this zone. The concrete is in a critically stressed area; immediate remedial action is recommended. Pressure grouting as an interim measure is suggested. There is one possible continuous crack in gate monolith R-23; it runs for a depth of 35 ft and possibly extends for two-thirds of the monolith to the riverside.

A condition survey was performed at Locks and Dam No. 2 on the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania to determine the extent of possible concrete damage, processes causing distress of the concrete, selected physical and mechanical properties of the concrete and foundation materials, and the ability of the concrete to perform satisfactorily under anticipated conditions of future service. The field investigation included a visual inspection of the structure to determine the general condition of the concrete, and drilling operations to recover concrete and foundation core. Results of the field investigation and laboratory tests indicated that the concrete is generally in good condition, with dissolution of carbonate aggregate particles giving the appearance of exposed aggregate to the concrete. Some pop outs, scaling, and spalling are also present. The near surface concrete contains some cracking not associated with any apparent chemical reaction. The cracks do not appear to be active. The concrete in this structure should remain serviceable for a period of 50 years from the data of this investigation. (fr).

A condition survey was performed at Lock and Dam No. 8 on the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania to determine the quality of concrete, extent of possible concrete damage, process causing distress of the concrete, and selected physical and mechanical properties of the concrete and foundation materials. The field investigation included a visual examination of the lock and drilling operations to recover concrete and foundation core. Results of the field investigation and laboratory tests indicated that the processes causing distress in the concrete are freezing and thawing action and alkali-silica reaction. The concrete is extensively damaged on and near the top of the guide, guard, and lock walls. Overall the lock concrete is in poor condition evidenced by fine to wide cracking, light to severe scaling, and large spalls. Low-quality concrete exists to depths of 3 ft vertically and 3 ft horizontally in the guide, guard, and lock walls. Concrete beneath the damaged zones is considered to be of good quality. Cores recovered from the two upstream gate recess monoliths contain rubble and broken (first-size) and cracked concrete. Damaged concrete in the landwall upper gate recess at least 3 ft from the sector pin assembly.
