Handbook of Public Administration

Handbook of Public Administration PDF Author: W. Bartley Hildreth
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1498750044
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 349

Book Description
Public administration as a field of study finds itself in the middle of a fluid environment. The very reach and complexity of public administration has been easy to take for granted, easy to attack, and difficult to explain, particularly in the soundbite and Twitter-snipe media environment. Not only has the context for the discipline changed, but the institutions of public administration have adapted and innovated to deliver services to the public and serve those in power while becoming increasingly complex themselves. Has public administration evolved? And what new lines of research are critical for effective policy and delivery of programs and public services while preserving foundational principles such as the rule of law and expert institutions? This Handbook of Public Administration sheds light for new researchers, doctoral students, scholars, and practitioners interested in probing modern public administration’s role in solving major challenges facing nations and the world. This fourth edition recognizes that the scholarship of public administration must reflect the diverse influence of an international orientation, embracing public administration issues and practices in governance systems around the world, and illustrating just how practice can vary across jurisdictions. Every section identifies foundational principles and issues, shows variation in practice across selected jurisdictions, and identifies promising avenues for research. Each chapter revisits enduring themes and tensions, showing how they persist, along with new challenges and opportunities presented by digital technology and contemporary political realities. The Handbook of Public Administration, Fourth Edition provides a compelling introduction to and depiction of the contemporary realities of public administration, and it will inspire new avenues of inquiry for the next generation of public administration researchers.

Concurrent Sourcing

Concurrent Sourcing PDF Author: Thomas Bryant Cassidey
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electronic dissertations
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
For decades, financial pressures have led to specialization and outsourcing of critical components to manufacturing processes. In many cases, this has led to dedicated single supply sourcing practices. In the face of disruption risks, as evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortcomings of this strategy are felt by firms and the world, leading to reduced profits and economic pain. This dissertation investigates the use of in-house production of components, concurrently with outsourcing, to mitigate supply and demand risks. The first contribution develops and analyzes a mathematical model for concurrent sourcing under all-or-nothing disruption risk. The concurrent sourcing manufacturer's optimal strategy is fully characterized. The results show that consideration of the outsource supplier's optimization problem significantly alters the performance of the manufacturer's optimal strategy. Acknowledging that sourcing decisions are also made by human procurement professionals, the second contribution develops a behavioral model and experiment to analyze decision bias and rationality. The results show that systematic bias in the concurrent sourcing decision problem can be predicted, using only expected profit as the decision maker's stated objective. The third dissertation contribution develops and analyzes a mathematical model for concurrent sourcing under demand and stochastic lead time risk. Specifically, disruptions to a supplier order amount are manifested as a random delivery delay, and the manufacturer may use in-house production of components or an expedited supply option to supplement ordered components. The results show that the manufacturer should make outsource supplier order amounts which target certain service levels, and use the other sources of components to preempt supplier disruptions and supplement supplier deliveries.

IT Strategy for Non-IT Managers

IT Strategy for Non-IT Managers PDF Author: Amrit Tiwana
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262341964
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
How non-IT managers can turn IT from an expensive liability into a cost-effective competitive tool. Firms spend more on information technology (IT) than on all other capital assets combined. And yet despite this significant cash outlay, businesses often end up with IT that is uneconomical and strategically feeble. What is missing in many organizations' IT strategy is the business acumen of managers from non-IT departments. This book presents tools for non-IT managers to turn IT from an expensive liability into a cost-effective competitive tool. It equips readers with the concepts and analytical skills necessary to understand IT needs and opportunities from both sides of the business–IT divide. Each chapter opens with a jargon decoder–nontechnical explanations of the key ideas in the chapter—and ends with a checklist summarizing non-IT factors to consider in IT decisions. Chapters cover such topics as infusing competitive firepower into IT strategy; amalgamating software and data for a hard-to-duplicate competitive advantage; making choices that meet today's business needs without handicapping future strategy; establishing who decides what about IT strategies; sourcing IT and its challenges; protecting IT assets against disaster in ways that IT professionals cannot; and recognizing the business potential of emerging technologies. Examples are drawn from large corporations, small businesses, and nonprofits around the world. The book is suitable for use in the MBA core IT course, and is aimed especially at students in professional or executive MBA programs. It will also be a valuable reference for managers.

Book Description
Providing a fresh perspective on strategy from an organizational perspective through a discursive approach featuring key theoretic tenets, this text is also pragmatic and emphasizes the practices of strategy to encourage the reader to be open to a wider set of ideas, with a little more relevance, and with a cooler attitude towards the affordances of the digital world and the possibilities for strategy’s futures. The key areas of Strategy take a critical stance in the new edition, and also include areas less evident in conventional strategy texts such as not-for-profit organizations, process theories, globalization, organizational politics and decision-making as well as the futures of strategy.

Why Do Firms Both Make and Buy? An Investigation of Concurrent Sourcing

Why Do Firms Both Make and Buy? An Investigation of Concurrent Sourcing PDF Author: Anne E. Parmigiani
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Transaction cost economics, neoclassical economics, and the firm capabilities literatures propose theories of the firm that typically depict firm boundaries determined by a dichotomous choice: the make or buy decision. However, none of these theories presents a satisfying explanation as to why firms would concurrently source, i.e., simultaneously make and buy the same good. This study combines these organizational economics theories and compares when firms make, buy, and concurrently source through surveying small manufacturing firms. Support was shown for aspects of all three theories, with evidence indicating that concurrent sourcing is a distinctly different choice, rather existing along a make/buy continuum.
