Book Description
Excerpt from Old Concord The points of chief interest in the historical and literary associations of Old Concord, may also be depended upon for its accuracy. Its historical mat ter I have drawn from the Concord histories of Lemuel Shattuck (1835) and Charles H. Walcott from the Concord Social Circle Memoirs, from the writings of Grindall Reynolds, and from the publications of the Concord Antiquarian Soci ety, chiefly those by the late George Tolman. For facts concerning Concord's literary notables I have drawn principally upon their own writings. Thebook also contains material from Concord tradition and family knowledge, not to be found in print. For help in verifying my statements, and for supply ing me with much matter previously unknown to me, I am much indebted to my neighbors Dr. Edward Waldo Emerson, Judge Prescott Keyes, and Mr. Adams Tolman. I am also greatly obliged for the courteous help of the librarians of the Concord Free Public Library, and I desire to express my thanks for permission to quote directly from the publications. Book Description
Excerpt from Souvenir and Guide to Historic Concord and Lexington The site of this is well marked in many places throughout the town by means of monuments, tablets and stones. Perhaps the most notable of these is the Minute Man, a magnificent bronze, designed by Daniel French, a Concord boy, and marking as nearly as possible the spot where the sturdy farmers stood in their first attack. A reminder, too, of this may be seen in the old jones House which bears the mark of a British bullet. Behind this house is the Ridge which continues nearly parallel with Monument Street and Lexington Road. Along this the Minute Men pursued the British who fled along the roadway, routing them completely as they came into the open at Meriam's Corner. No rule can be laid down by which Concord can best be seen, for there are many points of interest to one, that might not seem of great moment to another, owing to the fact that there are two distinct classes who come here those who are attracted by the purely historic and those to whom the literary shrines appeal. For convenience, however, the publisher of this book has arranged the following routes all of which may best be started from Monument Square. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Concord: Told by Concord Writers The Editor has no apology to make for the miscellaneous character of this volume. She has tried to depict briefly the history of Concord from the Plantation to the present time, as presented in the writings of its own inhabitants. Whether their residence in Concord has been long or short, it has been long enough for some part of the life of the town to be seen and reflected from their own angle of vision. The reader must himself focus the rays to see a true picture of this model New England town. Acknowledgement is due for kind assistance given in the preparation of the work to Mr. Frank B. Sanborn, Judge John S. Keyes, Mr. Frank Preston Stearns, Mrs. Daniel Lothrop, Mr. George Tolman, Mr. Winfred D. Excerpt from Concord Authors at Home: Concord the Town Lord Amberly, Arthur Clough, Elizabeth Peabody, Julia Ward Howe, Harriet Martineau and the many kindred souls of that time. Could we go back to the days of the School of Philosophy and its meetings, when those enthusiastic but theoretical Transcendentalists held forth in the little chapel-like building on the Lexington Road, how true a picture would be ours of the Concord that has made for today.
