You've probably heard Elmer Bernstein's music, you just don't realize it: The Academy Award-winning composer has scored more than 200 films, including The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Ten Commandments. In fact, it was Bernstein who encouraged Christopher Parkening to study music back in the 1960s. Now Bernstein's written a big, romantic concerto for the guitarist. Lushly orchestrated (by Bernstein's colleague Christopher Palmer) and unfailingly melodic, this is a major addition to the instrument's repertory. The bold, cinematic character of the music is evident from the beginning, and this is what gives the concerto its evocative atmosphere. The composer conducts the London Symphony, and he also guides the orchestra in Jack Marshall's imaginative arrangement of Isaac Albňiz's La Vega. It's an ideal coupling. Marshall transforms the piano original into a magical, miniature guitar concerto that conjures up vivid images of Spain's castles and villages. Marshall's Essay for Guitar is offered as a substantial encore. This delightful, dulcet concertino was actually Parkening's debut recording, made back in 1967 when the guitarist was just 19, and it wears its years lightly. Reissuing this little bit of history gives us an ear-opening glimpse of Parkening's amazing precocity; presented alongside these two stunning new performances, it also allows us to hear how richly his gifts have matured.

This concerto was composed for my good friend Giovanni De Chiaro, and was commissioned by the Shreveport Summer Music Festival, where it premiered. The title "Concierto de Chiaro" is one with multiple meanings and combines words of Spanish and Italian origins. First, of course, it is a homage to John's name, but chiaro also means light in Italian, and indeed the work has a certain feeling of light and lightness to it, as one would experience on a walk through a forest on a sunny day. There is a hint of Spanish style within the music as well, which is my way of reflecting the great connection between Spanish culture and the history of the guitar. The piece has been performed with numerous orchestras, and John and I recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra in January of 2017 for the Centaur label.
