Book Description
Excerpt from Publications From the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: January, 1927 The later careful experimental work of Lamb and Coolidge on the ad sorption heats for organic vapors, wherein the charcoal was pumped out at 350 and to a pressure of mm., Showed that the adsorption heat was reproducible and decreased in a definite manner with the amount adsorbed. It was further clearly demonstrated that the heats of ad sorption were practically independent of the capacity of the charcoal to adsorb large amounts of fluid. Interesting relationships were also pointed out connecting the heats of adsorption with the latent heats of vaporiza tion, and the heat of compression under high pressure. Book Description
Excerpt from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston: A Brief Account of Its Foundation, Character, and Equipment Dr. Rogers died in 1882. At the time of his death he was President of the National Academy of Sciences. Among Dr. Rogers' co-laborers were some of the most eminent men of the time, notably, Dr. Jacob Bigelow, James B. Francis, George B. Emerson, Erastus B. Bigelow, John D. and Edward S. Philbrick. Requirements for Admission. The requirements for admission are substantially the same as the requirements for graduation from a good city high school or from the English or scientific department of an endowed academy like Exeter, Andover, or Easthampton. The examinations embrace Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, History, French (or German), English Grammar and Composition. The average age of the entering class is a little over eighteen and a half years. Degrees. The degree of Bachelor of Science (S.B.) is given for the successful completion of any one of the four-year courses. The degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Science are offered for the completion of advanced courses of study at the Institute. Agriculture. It will appear from the list of courses already given that the art of Agriculture is not taught at the Institute. The reason is that, when Congress passed the Act of July 2, 1862, providing for the establishment in each State of at least one College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, by Act of April 27, 1863, constituted the Institute of Technology (which had been previously chartered) the College of Mechanic Arts for the Commonwealth, and at the same time established a college at Amherst to promote the interests of agricultural education. Book Description
Excerpt from Bulletin of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Vol. 47: Register of Former Students, March, 1912 This Register contains the names of all persons who have been enrolled for at least one term as students in any of the courses of instruction in the School of Industrial Science or in the School of Mechanic Arts of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and whose connection with the Institute as undergraduates terminated before October 1, 1911. In general, however, the names of students who entered with classes that graduate after 1911 are not included, even when such students are not at present attending the Institute. The annual Register of Graduates hitherto issued will probably be discontinued, and it is expected that revised editions of this Register will be published from time to time, perhaps at intervals of five years. The addresses and occupations have been corrected in accordance with information furnished prior to April, 1912. The omission of an address indicates either that none has been supplied or that letters mailed to the last known address have been returned as unclaimed. Information regarding incorrect or missing addresses and occupations is earnestly desired by the Registrar. Book Description
Excerpt from An Address on the Limits of Education, Read Before the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, November 16, 1865 IN 1829 a volume was published in Boston bearing the name of Elements of Technology. This name was not then in use nor was it generally understood, except by those who drew its meaning from its etymology. It was not in Johnson's Dictionary, nor yet in Rees's Cyclopaedia. In Worcester's Dictionary, where it now has a place, no older authority is cited for its support than that of the volume alluded to. Its analogue indeed was extant in some other languages, and fifty years ago was published in Latin among the Theses of the graduating class of Harvard College. But its revival for the use of English readers had to be justi fied by the assertion that it might be found in some of the older dictionaries. Such, less than forty years ago, was the doubtful tenure in English literature of a word which now gives name in this city to a vigorous and popular institution, a large endow ment, a magnificent edifice, and at the same time a great and commanding department of' scientific study in every quarter of the civilized world. It has happened in regard to technology that in the present century and almost under our own eyes, it has advanced with greater strides than any other agent of civilization, and has done more than {my science to enlarge the boundaries of profitable knowledge, to extend the dominion of mankind over nature, to economize and utilize both labor and time.
