La comunicación es en nuestros días un valor en alza. Cada vez es más patente el hecho de que la sociedad se autodefine y configura en buena medida en cuanto que se comunica. El poder y el conocimiento se miden en términos informativos y la comunicación adquiere una dimensión fundamental que se fortalece por los avances tecnológicos permitiendo que se rompan límites, espacios y tiempos en torno a su función ancestral. Seguir pensando que el lenguaje verbal es el único que nos conduce a comprender el sentido y significado de nuestro mundo es un hecho demasiado evidente. Sin embargo, aún persiste una manifiesta y reticente aversión a integrar lo que muchos llaman ya los nuevos lenguajes de la comunicación en los planteamientos curriculares. Los tímidos intentos y aproximaciones muestran confusiones y ambigüedades fruto, probablemente, del analfabetismo que se detecta en el uso de los lenguajes no verbales y audiovisuales. En muchos casos las experiencias realizadas se han hecho desde la perspectiva de la enseñanza de las lenguas y se ha tratado de formar al alumnado en un concepto amplio de la comunicación atendiendo al desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa. Enseñar y aprender la competencia mediática constituye un reto, pero a la vez una exigencia en el marco de una sociedad como la actual, en la que los medios y tecnologías de la información y comunicación han conseguido transformar los usos y recursos de los intercambios comunicativos. Plantear la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de la competencia mediática en el ámbito educativo de la enseñanza de las lenguas requiere una nueva didáctica para no convertir la comunicación en un saber muerto e inmóvil , algo absolutamente contrario a su esencia, que es el lenguaje entendido no como un sistema semiótico abstracto, inmanente y ajeno a las intenciones de los usuarios.
