This report presents the results of a theoretical and experimental program aimed at obtaining a sufficient understanding of the rotating stall phenomena such that its onset and properties can be predicted under a wide set of circumstances. The theoretical research covers the development of two-dimensional stability theories for compressible flows and the progress towards the development of a three-dimensional theory for incompressible flow. The experimental work, performed in an annular cascade facility, studied the effects of rotorstator interference both on the steady-state performance of the blade rows and on rotating stall. The influence of circumferential distortion on the rotating stall boundary for the stage was also determined. Comparisons are made between the experimental results and the predictions of a two-dimensional rotating stall stability theory which had been developed previously for incompressible flows. (Author).

Results of a High-speed 10-stage axial-flow compressor test involving overall compressor and individual stage performance while stalling and operating in quasi-steady rotating stall are described. Test procedures and data acquisition methods used to obtain the dynamic stalling and quasi-steady in-stall data are explained. Unstalled and in-stall data obtained from the compressor operating at five different shaft speeds and one off-schedule variable vane condition are presented. The effects of compressor speed and variable geometry on overall compressor in-stall pressure rise and hysteresis extent are illustrated through the use of quasi-steady stage temperature and pressure rise characteristics. The results indicate that individual stage performance during overall compressor. Time resolved install data acquired at two different shaft speeds are presented in support of the notion that stage operation varies significantly from entrance to exit of the compressor. Both time-averaged and time-resolved individual stage results suggest that stage matching is important, not only for unstalled performance but also for in-stall performance and recoverability from stall. The measured high-speed 10-stage test compressor individual stage pressure and temperature characteristics were input into a stage-by-stage dynamic compressor performance model. The analytical model had been previously validated for the prediction of low-speed compressor stalling and in-stall performance. (SDW).

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. Many well-known investigations on flow instabilities of axial compressors have been conducted in low-speed research machines, often in a single stage configuration. It is at least not assured, that the results can be transferred directly to multi-stage compressors with compressible flow, therefore measurements in machines of this type are of considerable practical interest. These machines, however, pose a lot more problems in realisation, operation and measuring techniques. They have to be of robust and elaborate design and manufacture to withstand high rotational speed and to avoid problems with blade vibrations and critical rotor speed. They need even as model machines with reduced size driving power of several hundred kW up to the MW range, preferably with variable speed.
