Book Description
Excerpt from Complete Works of Lyof N. Tolstoi, Vol. 5 As soon as Aleksei Aleksandrovitch had learned from Betsy and Stepan Arkadyevitch that all that was expected of him was that he should leave his wife in peace and not trouble her with his presence, and that his wife herself wished this, he had felt himself in too great perplexity to be able to decide anything for himself, and he did not know what he wanted; but, having placed his fate in the hands of others, who were willing enough to occupy themselves with his affairs, he was ready to accept whatever might be proposed to him. Only when Anna had taken her departure and when the English governess sent to inquire if she should dine with him or by herself, did he for the first time clearly realize his position and its full horror. The hardest element in this state of affairs was that he could not coordinate and reconcile his past with the present. Nor was it the past when he lived happily with his wife that disturbed him. The transition from that past to the knowledge of his wife's infidelity he had borne like a martyr; that state of things was trying, but it was comprehensible to him. If at the time when his wife had confessed her wrong to him she had left him, he would have been mortified and unhappy; but he would not have been in that inextricable, incomprehensible position in which he now felt that he was. Book Description
Excerpt from The Novels and Other Works of Lyof N. Tolstoi, Vol. 2: Resurrection It was morning before Nekhludoff could fall asleep, and therefore he woke late. At noon seven men chosen from among the peasants at the foreman's invitation, came into the orchard, where the foreman's invitation, came into the orchard, where the foreman had arranged a table and benches by digging posts into the ground, and fixing boards on the top, under the apple tees. It took some time before the peasants could be persuaded to put on their caps and to sit down in the benches. Especially firm was the ex-soldier, who to-day had bark shoes on. He stood erect, holding, his cap as they do at funerals, according to military regulation. When one of them, a respectable looking, brood shouldered old man, with a curly, grizzly beard like that of Michel Angelo's "Mouse," and grey hair that curled round the brown, bald forehead, put on his big cap, and, wrapping his coat round him, got in behind the tables and sat down, the rest followed his example. When all had taken their places, Nekhuludoff sat down opposite them and leaning on the table over the paper on which he had drawn up his project, he began explaining it. In the meantime, life, - the ordinary life of men, with its own concerns of health, illness, labor, recreation, with its interest in philosophy, science, poetry, music, love, friendship, hatreds, sufferings, went on as always, independent and outside of political alliance or enmity with Napoleon Bonaparte, and outside of all possible reforms. Book Description
Excerpt from The Novels and Other Works of Lyof N. Tolstoi, Vol. 4: War and Peace Toward the end of the year 1811 began a mobilization and concentration of forces in Western Europe; and in 1812, these forces - millions of men, counting those who were concerned in the transport and victualing of the armies - were moved from West to East toward the borders of Russia, where the Russian forces were drawn up just as they had been the year before. On the twenty-fourth of June, the forces of Western Europe crossed the Russian frontier, and war began: in other words, an event took place opposed to human reason and human nature. Millions of men committed against one another a countless number of crimes, deceptions, treacheries, robberies, forgeries, issues of false assignats, depredations, incendiary fires, murders, such as the annals of all the courts in all the world could not equal in the aggregate of centuries; and yet which, at that period, the perpetrators did not even regard as crimes. What brought about this extraordinary event? What were its causes? The historians, with naive credulity, say that the causes of this event are to be found in the affront offered to the Duke of Oldenburg, in the disregard of the "Continental System," in Napoleon's ambition, Alexander's firmness, the mistakes of diplomatists, and what not.
