Le siècle passé a vu, simultanément, le développement économique quasi constant et sans précédent des pays européens et nord américains, le décollage extraordinaire du Japon et l'essoufflement des pays d'Amérique Latine, alors même que certains d'entre eux présentaient des niveaux de revenu par tête supérieurs à ceux de l'Europe du Sud en début de période. Cette hétérogénéité de comportements pose de façon cruciale la question des déterminants de la croissance Sur le long terme. C'est à cette question ainsi qu'aux formes de développement adoptées que cette thèse est consacrée et qu'elle tente de répondre au moyen d'une étude empirique. Notre travail se distingue des nombreux travaux déjà menés sur le sujet en soulignant le rôle des interactions entre les facteurs de croissance. Cette orientation répond à la fois à un souci de revenir aux raisons ultimes du décollage, économique et à une volonté d'assouplir les hypothèses simplistes de développement linéaire. L'évolution des pays d'Amérique latine, et notamment leur histoire politique mouvementée, nous amène à étudier plus précisément l'interaction des sphères institutionnelle et économique. L'existence de relations réciproques est prise en compte grâce à l'utilisation d'un modèle à équations simultanées. Nos résultats suggèrent que la succession de régimes populistes au pouvoir ainsi qu'une instabilité chronique ont entravé le développement économiques des pays latino-américains. Par opposition, les pays caractérisés par des régimes politiques stabilisés ont connu une croissance économique dont les déterminants sont à rechercher principalement du côté des variables économiques. A ce sujet, notre travail suggère que l'éducation et l'ouverture économique ont eu un impact sur la croissance économique d'autant plus important que leur accumulation s'est faite simultanément. Cependant, ce n'est pas directement sur la croissance que ces facteurs ont agi, mais sur le rattrapage technologique en favorisant le processus d'imitation et la propagation des hausses de productivité.
