Book Description
This report summarizes the progress made during this period. A series of experiments on levels in 144Nd have led to the identification of quadrupole-octupole coupled states in the nucleus. These experiments included the measurement of excited level lifetimes using the GRID technique, the measurement of transition conversion coefficients and the measurement of weak transition intensities. A fast electronic timing system has been set-up at Tennessee Tech. This system can be used to measure nuclear excited state lifetimes in the range from 5 ps upward. A new variation of the centroid shift method has been developed which eliminates the need to determine a prompt position. This centroid difference method employs both forward and reverse gating of gamma cascades to generate two timing spectra.

Book Description
It has been suggested in the past that special numbers of neutrons or protons in the nucleus form a particularly stable configuration.p1s The complete evidence for this has never been summarized, nor is it generally recognized how convincing this evidence is. That 20 neutrons or protons (Ca{sup40}) form a closed shell is predicted by the Hartree model. A number of calculations support this fact.p2s These considerations will not be repeated here. In this paper, the experimental facts indicating a particular stability of shells of 50 and 82 protons and of 50, 82, and 126 neutrons will be listed.

Book Description
We have studied two regions of doubly closed shell nuclei over the nuclear chart: stable nuclei with N Z around 40Ca and highly neutron-rich ones close to drip-line above the 132Sn shell closure. Both experimental and theoretical works have been performed for each of these mass regions. The experimental part includes three works: (i) high energy characterization of the Compton suppressed Clover detector, (ii) In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic studies of high spin states of 35Cl in mass 40 region and (iii) X- and gamma- ray spectroscopic studies of fission fragments of 252Cf spontaneous fission source in mass 132Sn region. The theoretical study supplemented the experimental findings using the microscopic Shell model and the phenomenological Particle Rotor model. Our work emphasizes that the issues thought to be relevant for nuclei away from stability, should also be studied over a broader region of nuclear territory. With the latest developments in the experimental facilities, the nuclei near the stability line should be re-investigated for finding possible correlations with those away from stability.
