Ever since people have lived together in groups, there have been leaders and those who are led. The many different leadership styles have also been discussed and criticized since the 1950s. The question arises which style is the most efficient or the "right" style for leading people. For a company it is of great importance with which behavior their managers can influence or motivate the employees to the best possible performance and thus achieve the company's goals. Empirical studies show that the leadership style has a great influence on the work and well-being of leaders and employees and thus also on the economic success of the company. However, there is no one optimal leadership style as several studies and publications have already proven. Each of the styles can achieve both positive and negative results, depending on the situation and the individual employee. The leadership styles should be adapted according to the situation. In this paper, after defining the terms leadership and leadership style, on the one hand the classical leadership styles and on the other hand the transactional and the transformational leadership styles are explained and compared. Possible advantages and disadvantages as well as their influence on employee motivation, willingness to perform and leadership success will be shown. In addition, results of current studies will provide an insight into the state of research. Finally, the most important points are summarized and a concluding conclusion is drawn on the basis of the knowledge gained.

In a constantly changing world threatened by the likelihood of terrorist acts, the American people need military leaders who clearly demonstrate an understanding of American core values, and who are both competent and morally focused. In order to produce military leaders who meet these qualifications and who can successfully meet the future challenges America faces, it is important to develop and refine those leaders early and help them understand how to create and refine a successful leadership style. The process of developing leadership styles, however, is not easy and it requires a prodigious amount of determination, time, and planning from prospective future leaders. It also requires military training institutions to align their curriculums to promote leadership, as well as, to provide guidance and mentoring in order to help develop these future leaders. One way to help develop leaders is to provide examples of both successful and flawed military leadership styles. There are many cases of each in American history. In particular, World War II leaders Admirals Ernest J. King and Chester W. Nimitz provide contrasting examples of naval leadership. An examination of the leadership styles of these two naval officers provides useful examples which future leaders can consider when reflecting on their own leadership styles. After careful review, it soon becomes evident that the leadership style of Nimitz closely aligned with the leadership styles of Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower, two World War II leaders I closely examined in my previous Master’s thesis. In addition, it also becomes evident that King was a diametrically different leader from these three leaders. He provides an example of a leader who was cold, harsh, and morally bankrupt. As result, reviewing the leadership styles of these World War II leaders will benefit future leaders as well as those they lead.

The purpose of this research was to examine effective leadership practices across cultures. Specifically, this study investigated differences in leadership practices of educational leaders. The relationship between effective leadership and cultural competency was also examined. Kouzes and Posner's (2002) conceptual framework was used to assess effective leadership practices while the cultural intelligence conceptual framework developed by Earley and Ang (2003) was utilized to examine cross-cultural competency. A non-experimental quantitative approach was used to compare educational leaders from top ranked public universities in the Midwestern state of Missouri in the United States to their counterparts in Kenya. Upper, middle, and lower management leaders were surveyed on universally endorsed leadership practices (Kouzes & Posner, 2002) and cultural competencies (Early & Ang, 2003). Data from the surveys were examined for differences in leadership practices and assessed for correlations between effective leadership and cultural competency. Knowledge gained from the study was expected to facilitate a better understanding of effective leadership practices across cultures and provide insight on ways to advance, train, and develop cross-cultural leadership competencies in higher education settings (Tang, Yin, & Min, 2011; Triandis, 2006; Van Dyne, Ang & Livermore, 2010; Walker & Dimmock, 1999).
