The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of following either the Curves® Fitness and Weight Management Plan or the Weight Watchers® Momentum Plan on body composition and markers of health and fitness in previously sedentary obese women. Fifty-one women (age 35±8 yrs; height 163±7 cm; weight 90±1 kg; BMI 34±5 kg/m2; 47±7% body fat) were randomized to participate in the Curves® (C) or Weight Watchers® (W) weight loss programs for 16-wks. Participants in the C group (n=24) followed a 1,200 kcal/d diet for 1-wk; 1,500 kcal/d diet for 3 wks (~30%:45% CHO:PRO); and 2,000 kcals/d for 2-wks (45:30) and repeated this diet while participating in a supervised Curves® with Zumba program 3-d-wk. Remaining subjects (n=27) followed the W point-based diet program, received weekly group counseling, and were encouraged to exercise. Body composition, anthropometrics, resting energy expenditure (REE), lipid biomarkers, and hormone concentrations were assessed at 0, 4, 10, and 16 weeks. Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise capacity and upper and lower body isotonic strength and endurance were assessed at 0 and 16 weeks. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance for repeated measures. MANOVA analysis of body composition data revealed overall time (Wilks' Lamda p=0.001) and time by diet effects (Wilks0́9 Lamda p=0.003). Subjects in both groups lost a similar amount of total mass (C -2.4±2.0, -4.1±3.4, -5.1±3.9; W -2.3±2.3, -4.5±3.0, -5.5±4.6 kg, p=0.78). However, subjects in the C group tended to have a greater reduction in percent body fat (C -3.3±5.2, -3.2±4.6, -4.7±5.4; W 0.6±6.7, -0.6±8.3, -1.4±8.1%, p=0.10) and body fat mass (C -3.9±5.5, -4.6±5.3, -6.4±5.9; W -0.4±5.7, -2.1±6.7, -2.9±7.8 kg, p=0.09), while maintaining FFM (C 1.5±4.3, 0.52±3.7, 1.3±4.0; W -1.8±5.4, -2.4±5.8, -2.5±5.1, p=0.01). While both groups had increases cardiovascular fitness, the C group experienced improvements in upper body muscular endurance (C 1.4±3.9; W -1.2±2.4 repetitions, p=0.006). Both groups experienced improvements in lipid biomarkers; however, only the C group experienced a moderate increase in HDL-c. Results indicate that participants following the C program experienced more favorable changes in body composition and markers of fitness and health than participants in the W program. Exercise training is known to decrease fat mass and increase lean mass in adolescents and adults. In adults, the consumption of dairy foods, as part of a lifestyle intervention, can promote favourable body composition changes. However, results of the few studies examining the combined effects of exercise and dairy consumption on body composition in adolescents are inconclusive. The purpose of our study was to determine whether increased dairy consumption, along with structured exercise training and dietary guidance within a weight management program, can promote favourable changes in body composition, anthropometry and cardiovascular fitness in overweight/obese adolescent females. Sixty-one adolescent females (age: 14.8±2.2 y; BMI: 29.3±5.1 kg/m2) were randomized to 3 groups: recommended dairy (RDa; n=24); low dairy (LDa; n=22); control (GCon; n=8), and 54 participants completed the study. The RDa and LDa groups participated in a 12-week, individualized, eucaloric, lifestyle modification intervention consisting of mixed-mode exercise 3x/week, and 5 nutritional counselling sessions with a registered dietitian. RDa group was provided 4 servings/day of dairy (as milk, Greek yogurt and cheese), while LDa maintained habitually low intakes of 0-2 servings/day. Seven-day food records were collected at weeks 0 and 12. Body composition, waist/hip circumference, and VO2peak were assessed for all groups at weeks 0 and 12. Both RDa and LDa decreased body fat (-1.7±1.5%, -1.2±1.1%, respectively), fat mass (-1.3±2.1kg, -1.1±2.0kg, respectively) and subcutaneous fat thickness (-12.5±10.0mm, -9.1±9.4mm, respectively) compared with the GCon (0.3±1.3%, 0.8±1.8kg, 3.0±8.0mm, respectively) (p ≤0.002 for all). RDa decreased fat mass (kg) more than LDa (p=0.001). Both RDa and LDa gained more lean mass (1.5±1.9kg, 0.7±1.6kg, respectively) than GCon (0.5±1.4kg). RDa increased lean mass more than LDa (p≤0.001). VO2peak (ml/min/kg) did not differ between groups following the intervention (p=0.093). These findings suggest that the inclusion of a variety of dairy foods in the diet of overweight/obese adolescent girls, as part of a weight management intervention program, is beneficial to the overall improvement in body composition.

Background: Obesity has been identified as one of the more serious health risk factors facing many individuals and society as a whole. The cost that is associated with the loss of life and medical expenses is significantly greater than that of smoking, excessive drinking, and poverty. In a working population, to stay economically viable and healthy, exercise and physical activity need to be a part of daily lifestyle to maintain both healthy body weight and composition and to prevent negative work effects. Obesity leads to reduced productivity and efficiency at the workplace, and leads to greater healthcare costs for companies. The cost of obesity in healthcare encompasses direct costs such as missed days to indirect costs from increased doctor visits and medications for health complications from obesity. There are numerous studies that support the fact that a modest reduction in weight can improve risk factors of obesity. Methods: A Physical Activity Pamphlet (PAP) was developed to assist employees in service industries with Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 25kg/m2 to make healthier choices about their weekly exercise patterns. The guide centers around adding more steps, burning more calories, and incorporating more exercise in simple ways. There is also a reference to MyPyramid.gov for nutritional advice and dietary suggestions. A Physical Activity Assessment Tool (PAAT) was also developed to measure the impact the PAP could have on changing the behavior of the employee group in making healthier choices. Conclusion: Studies of wellness programs in work settings have shown results of improving healthy behaviors of those that participate in the program. Wellness programs offer nutrition interventions and exercise advice, which include a variety of education tools to improve participant knowledge so they can make healthier choices. Implementing these changes would benefit both employees and their employers. It would aid employees by increasing job satisfaction, efficiency, and motivation, and reducing absenteeism rates. It would benefit employers by decreasing absenteeism, improving efficiency of work force, and improved overall morale at the workplace. This study would have shown that a change in diet and implementing a physical activity regimen would help to reduce weight and favorably change body composition, which would lower risks for chronic diseases and costs associated with obesity.
