Cotton is the major commercial crop amongst all cash crops in India and provides livelihood to more than 60 million people.Cotton crop is infested by various pests causing significant yield losses therefore Bt cotton was introduced in India.This study attempts to examine growth in area, production and productivity of cotton and also analyze the Comparative economics, sustainability and resource use efficiency.Finding of the study shows that Area, production and productivity of cotton had higher and positive growth during post introduction of Bt-cotton compared to the pre introduction period.Farmers cultivating Bt cotton incurred relatively higher cost of cultivation per acre compared to non-Bt farmers.However, net returns realized were also higher with Bt cotton farmers.Resource use efficiency analysis reveal that efficient use of labor, fertilizers and seeds had contributed the most to the difference in returns between Bt and non-Bt cotton cultivation. Sustainability analysis indicated that Bt-cotton was more sustainable with a higher and stable sustainability index. High yield, less pest attack and lower pesticide cost were the major motivating factors for adoption of Bt-cott

Biotechnology and the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops are providing new opportunities for increasing crop productivity and tackling agricultural problems, such as pests and diseases, abiotic stresses and nutritional limitations of staple food crops. Cultivation of GM crops is changing the practice of agriculture and there is an increasing trend in cultivation of GM crops worldwide. Plants with novel traits to produce pharmaceutical products are also being generated. The safety of GM crop cultivation and use is a topic of extreme international debate. Biotechnology innovations appear to have taken world agriculture by storm. This spectacular success is attributable almost entirely to transgenic varieties of four crops: soybean, corn, cotton, and canola. It is noteworthy that in 2013, the number of countries cultivating biotech crops reached the historical milestone of 28 countries. In 2013, the global hectarage of biotech crops continued to grow strongly reaching 175 million hectares, up from 160 million hectares in 2011. In 2012, the global market value of biotech crops was US$14.84 billion, (up from US$13.35 billion in 2011). Manjunath Kerur (2012) conducted a study on comparative economic analysis of Bt cotton and Desi cotton cultivation in Haveri district of Karnataka. The results on the per acre cost incurred and returns obtained from Bt cotton and Desi cotton cultivation revealed that the variable and fixed costs were higher in Bt cotton producing farms (Rs. 11748) and (Rs. 4049) compared to Desi cotton producing farms (Rs. 13202) and (Rs.3634) respectively. The gross returns and net returns from Bt cotton cultivation were Rs. 32096 and Rs. 15113 per acre, respectively as against Rs. 24140 and Rs. 6007 per acre from Desi cotton cultivation. In India, policy of encouraging genetically modified cotton needs a complete review and critical examination from the point of view of environment, diversity and health.

Overall goal of this paper is to re-examine findings of earlier efforts that analysed the effect of Bt cotton adoption in 1999 with two follow-up surveys conducted in 2000 and 2001. Our survey data on yields and econometric analyses indicate that the adoption of Bt cotton continues to increase output per hectare in 2000 and 2001 and that the yield gains extend to all provinces in our sample. More importantly, Bt cotton farmers also increased their incomes by reducing use of pesticides and labour inputs. Finally, survey data shows that Bt cotton continues to have positive environmental impacts by reducing pesticide use. We provide evidence that farmers have less health problems because of reduced pesticide use. We conclude with evidence that China is not unique and that there are lessons for other developing countries in their experience.

The adoption of Bt cotton in India has been remarkable with an unprecedented 168-fold increase between 2002-09. The price for official Bt cotton seed in India in 2005 was Rs 1600. The Indian government imposed a ceiling on the price of Bt cotton seeds in 2006. Thus, the adoption rates recorded an increase of 192% in 2006 over the previous year. Also during the same period when the adoption rates were increasing, many more Bt cotton hybrids were approved for cultivation in India. This book has analyzed whether and to what extent the government seed price interventions in 2006 have influenced adoption of Bt cotton in India. Another important contribution of this research is finding the effect of technological development defined in terms of number of Bt hybrids approved for commercial cultivation, on percentage area adopted under Bt cotton. Using a dynamic logistic model, it finds that although seed price interventions of the government were successful in impacting the adoption rates but its impact was limited. It was also found that technological development is an important factor affecting adoption rates.
