Pages : 234

Book Description
The Spanish language has a long and rich history, from its prehistoric roots to its position today as the mother tongue of nearly 400 million inhabitants of 21 countries. How the language originated, how it evolved, and how it is spoken today around the world makes for a fascinating story that greatly enhances the study of written and spoken Spanish. This Spanish-language text covers the history of Spanish from its pre-Roman and Latin roots to its standardized form and its many regional variations. Along the way, discussion covers the spread of Latin on the Iberian Peninsula, the development of romance dialects due to a number of sociolinguistic influences, and the process of creating a standard variety of Spanish. It concludes with a discussion of the origin and the range of dialects that are spoken across the vast geographical area that forms the Spanish-speaking world. Details of pronunciation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary are explained in their historical context, giving the student of Spanish a deeper understanding of the language as a whole. The Grammar of Genes

The Grammar of Genes PDF Author: Ángel López García
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9783039106547
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
Mankind is the only speaking species on earth. Hence language is supposed to have a genetic basis, no matter whether it relies on general intelligence, or on a linguistic module. This study proposes that universal formal properties of the linguistic code emerged from the genetic code through duplication. The proportion of segmental duplication is clearly higher in the human genome than in any other species, and duplication took place 6 million years ago when humans separated from the other hominid branches. The evolution of language is therefore supposed to be a gradual process with a break. This book describes a lot of striking formal resemblances the genetic code and the linguistic code hold in common. The book aims to reconcile generative grammar with cognitive semiotics showing that both of them constitute instances of embodiment.

Book Description
The 12 articles of this volume show the many facets of contact in al-Andalus and Medieval Iberia, reminding us of how contact influenced art and learning in a wide range of fields: politics, science, philosophy, music and religion; offering views of how contact between societies affects both language, stereotype and assimilation; examining how war and conflict (re)define the representation of ideas, places and people; and demonstrating how representations changed over time through contact and conflict. Lessons of the past apply today as al-Andalus captures the modern imagination and cultures continue to come into contact across borders which either allow fluid diffusion of ideas or block passage.

El Español Y Su Estructura

El Español Y Su Estructura PDF Author: Silvia Burunat
Publisher: Holt McDougal
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : es
Pages : 340

Book Description
The book is comprehensive, structural review of the Spanish language for bilingual college students. It can be used as either an elementray or an intermediate textbook depending on students' level of linguistic competency. While these bilingual students are usually effective in oral communication in Spanish within their communities, they often have little knowledge of the written forms ... We have chosen to use a structuralist approach to grammar, as our experience in teaching Hispanics has shown that the use of grammatical terminology need not be considered an obstacle for the learner ... We think that Hispanics are already familiar with the use of verbs and, therefore, do not need to study them at the very beginning. [The book] is a general book in the sense that it can be used with any group of Spanish speakers regardless of their origin: Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, etc ... This is not a self-teaching textbook, since it requires a cooperative, combined effort from both the instructor and the student.-Pref.
