Excerpt from Community Production of Acala Cotton in New Mexico Cotton has been grown in the State of New Mexico since about 1910, but the development of the industry to a point of commercial importance was not attained until 1920, when about bales were produced. Prior to then, the production of the crop was largely confined to restricted areas in the Pecos River Valley, in the south eastern corner of the State. The principal producing districts at present lie in the valley of the Rio Grande m Dona Ana County and in the Pecos Valley in the counties of Chaves and Eddy, with several smaller districts in other parts of the State.
