However, no significant change took place at the political level. In Community and Culture in Post-Soviet Cuba, De Ferrari looks into the extraordinary survival of the Revolution by focusing on the personal, political and aesthetic social pacts that determined the configuration of the socialist state. Through close critical readings of a representative set of contemporary Cuban novels and works of visual art, this book argues that ethics and gender, rather than ideology, account for the intellectuals’ fidelity to the Revolution. Community and Culture does three things: it demonstrates that masculine sociality is the key to understanding the longevity of Cuba’s socialist regime; it examines the sociology of cultural administration of intellectual labor in Cuba; and it maps the emergent ethical and aesthetic paradigms that allow Cuban intellectuals to envision alternative forms of community and civil society.

Based on fifteen months of ethnographic research, this dissertation explores how the latest political and economic "update" of Cuban socialism is experienced, interpreted and re/mediated in the work of artists at "the Concoction" (El Mejunje), one of the oldest LGBT cultural centers in Cuba, located in the city of Santa Clara. After the dissolution of the Soviet bloc, the infrastructures of universal provisioning of the Cuban socialist welfare state broke down. The delivery of goods and services by the state became increasingly scarce and shaped by arrhythmic waiting. Art became one of the central affective means by which ordinary Cubans participated, debated, critiqued, and made sense of this changing political economic reality. The everyday struggle (lucha) for acquiring goods and services, constitutive of the lived experience of post-Soviet socialism in Cuba, drastically intensified as socialism was updating on the Island - a process which formally started in 2010 and led to the approval of a new socialist constitution in 2019. In this dissertation, I posit that artists in Cuba play central roles in moments of transition, during the so-called Special Period of the 90s and the current socialist update. They act as mediators, through different artistic mediums, between an increasingly faltering revolutionary state and the Cuban people. The Concoction emerged out of the political urgency of the Special Period, queering revolutionary ideology by problematizing multiple forms of marginalization and exclusion within the cultural politics of the Cuban Revolution, including (but not limited to) its hyper masculine heteronormative canons. I illustrate how, within the open community of the Concoction, the everyday lived experience of struggle in post-Soviet socialist Cuba is transformed into art, and how in turn art provides for an affective infrastructure that makes life livable and meaningful within and outside of Santa Clara. In the wake of 'disasters,' from hurricane Irma to Covid-19, artists at the Concoction cultivate forms of solidarity that activate people as a form of infrastructure, remediating for the lack of food, electricity, or medicines through their performances. By engaging with the past and present of this queer community, I argue that over the last thirty-five years, the Concoction have been functioning as a 'good enough space' to reconstitute revolutionary feelings in the midst of political disillusionment.

Focused on the intimate effects of large-scale economic transformations, After Love illuminates the ways that everyday efforts to imagine, resist, and enact market reforms shape sexual desires and subjectivities. Anthropologist Noelle M. Stout arrived in Havana in 2002 to study the widely publicized emergence of gay tolerance in Cuba but discovered that the sex trade was dominating everyday discussions among gays, lesbians, and travestis. Largely eradicated after the Revolution, sex work, including same-sex prostitution, exploded in Havana when the island was opened to foreign tourism in the early 1990s. The booming sex trade led to unprecedented encounters between Cuban gays and lesbians, and straight male sex workers and foreign tourists. As many gay Cuban men in their thirties and forties abandoned relationships with other gay men in favor of intimacies with straight male sex workers, these bonds complicated ideas about "true love" for queer Cubans at large. From openly homophobic hustlers having sex with urban gays for room and board, to lesbians disparaging sex workers but initiating relationships with foreign men for money, to gay tourists espousing communist rhetoric while handing out Calvin Klein bikini briefs, the shifting economic terrain raised fundamental questions about the boundaries between labor and love in late-socialist Cuba.

This visionary volume examines how queer bodies are theatrically represented on the Cuban stage in ways that challenge one of the state’s primary revolutionary tools, the categorization and homogenization of individuals. Bretton White critically analyzes contemporary performances that upset traditional understandings of performer and spectator, as well as what constitutes the ideal Cuban citizenry. Following the 1959 revolution, nonconformists were monitored and reported by local committees and punished or reformed by the government. Censorship was rampant, and Cuban art suffered as the state tried to control the national message. Through the lens of queer theory, White explores how the body has been central to the state’s fear-based marginalization of gay life and looks at the ways these theatrical performances defuse that fear. She highlights the revolutionary model of masculinity and the role it plays in excluding people based upon visible queer difference. White finds that, through experimental performances of sexuality, actors create connections with audiences to evoke shared feelings of discomfort, intimacy, shame, longing, frustration, and failure, which echo the prevalence of these feelings in other Cuban spaces. By performing queerness, these plays question the state’s narrative of heteronormativity and empower citizens to negotiate alternative understandings of Cuban identity.

Examining the ways in which apocalyptic discourses have had an impact on how we read the world’s globalised space, the traumatic burden of history, and the mutual relationship between language and eschatological belief, fifteen original essays by a group of internationally established and emerging critics reflect on the apocalypse, its past tradition, pervasive present and future legacy. The collection seeks to offer a new reading of the apocalypse, understood as a complex – and, frequently, paradoxical – paradigm of (contemporary) Western culture. The majority of published collections on the subject have been published prior to the year 2000 and, in their majority of cases, locate the apocalypse in the future and envision it as something imminent. This collection offers a post-millennial perspective that perceives "the end" as immanent and, simultaneously, rooted in the past tradition.
